  • A particular intersection of class and ethnicity was completely untouched and unbothered by what was going on

  • Identity - Rasa is very much disconnected from the majority Tamils as he has connections in Colombo which safeguard him (Philip). This evokes a sense of national identity crisis as well as within himself
P 186- "Some actually passed the curfew nights by setting up curfew parties"

  • Biopolitics - Curfews are a state apparatus to control people from rebelling against the state. However, there are exceptions to this. The elite in Colombo who have connections are excused - protection of that minority to the state's advantage in terms of support.

  • Traditional Gender Roles in Sri Lanka - influence of the patriarchy under colonialism

  • Identity - While Sita and Rasa should be able to relate to each other as 'Tamils' it is Philip that Rasa turns to. Indicating that segregation is based on language etc. is unnatural
