*I notice that the pig's name is Mercy. This makes me think that it must be a pet pig to have been given a name. I wonder why the name "Mercy"? Will that name be explained and/or important to the story? The title of the book tells that Mercy's last name is also Watson. Mercy must be considered a part of the family?! I also wonder how a pig can come to the rescue...

-I notice that it says Mr. and Mrs. Watson, so they must be married. It makes me wonder how old are they?
-Do they have kids, or is it just their pet pig named Mercy?
-It then makes me think why did they name their pig Mercy? It's hard to tell if that's a girls name or a boys name.
-I'm picturing all three of them outside on a farm. Pigs are usually kept on a farm, but I wonder where they live?

What appeals to me? The sentence piques my curiosity...is the pig a pet? It must be if the pig has a name...but why the name Mercy. These are two questions that should make a reader curious and provide the incentive to want to read on! I don't see any adjectives ) descriptive words. The images created are again based on questions - are they on a farm. I can imagine a farm living in Gilboa! Is Mercy alone, i.e. the only pig? Would just adults own the pig, or is a family pig? A further image that comes to mind is how I am reminded of Charlotte's Web (sorry I don't know how to underline with this padlet) The figurative language could be seen as giving a pig a human name. My first cousin's name is Mercy, so this is perhaps (but for me, a stretch) an example of personification. The speaker is a third person speaker, perhaps the author or another character, a neighbor, an outside of the family observer who wants to tell the story. The punctuation used is periods after the abbreviated names, and a period at the end of the sentence. Further, all proper nouns are capitalized!

*I notice that there are several proper nouns to discuss with students
* I also noticed a lack of adjectives. I wonder if this is done on purpose?
*Her name, Mercy, makes me think that the pig is kind and caring. The title also makes me feel that way about Mercy. She obviously is going to save something or someone.
*When I hear/see the name Mr. and Mrs. Watson I visualize older, intelligent and a sort of stuffy couple. lol...I don't know why but that's the picture I get. :)

~I notice that the main character in this book is Mercy the pig. I'm wondering if Mercy is going to be able to talk. I'm also curious about what she or he looks like. Why is she going to have to rescue someone? How will a pig rescue someone? This sentence has me questioning.
~I also notice that this is a statement with a period at the end.
~ The author could be telling the story, but I'm not 100% sure.
