Volcanoes form because the Earth's surface is very hot, and the temperature gets hotter as you go deeper into the Earth. At about 20 miles deep, the temperature is hot enough to melt most rocks. As rocks melt, they expand and require more space.

Volcanoes erupt due to a buildup of pressure inside the Earth. As magma (molten rock) and gas accumulate under the Earth's crust, the pressure builds up to a point where it can no longer be contained, causing the magma, gas, and other materials to be pushed out through the volcano's mouth.

Pressure builds up: Magma builds up in a magma chamber underground, creating great pressure on the surrounding rocks and the Earth's crust above.

3. Eruption:

When the pressure exceeds the rock's capacity, magma and gases are pushed to the surface, creating an eruption.
