But hey, the QR code to this conversation was posted up publicly, and it’s an interesting topic.

I agree this is a problem. While the student body on campus is very diverse, that diversity really isn’t reflected in the faculty. That’s not good.

But here’s my question: what do you want to do about it? I think something needs to be done for sure, I’m just not sure what. You really can’t arbitrarily fire white faculty in favor of people of color. I don’t think firing someone purely based on race would go over very well in the legal system. There would be some (entirely justified) lawsuits there. 

I think that the lack of diversity is indicative of larger issues here. UC Berkley hires primarily based on merit in the field, and due to the way America is set up, there aren’t as many minorities at the top level of academia. So what you’re really dealing with here is institutionalized racism. And that’s a tough battle. 

So I’ll ask again, what do you want to do about it? Because, while sitting around and (as one of my VERY well spoken peers on this padlet has done) saying things like “F white people” may feel satisfying, it’s rather unproductive.  Racism isn’t a good look on anyone. I do hope this movement doesn’t devolve into generic “progressiveness” as many I’ve seen have. Those are easier to dismiss by the university. 

I’ll be interested in seeing where this goes. Hopefully my kids will get taught by a more diverse group of teachers.
