1. It's prevalent, can be seen everywhere, and has affected our generation profoundly.
Lots of studies found correlations between Internet addiction and mental health issues (depression, social isolation, low self-esteem, and anxiety). Besides, health issues like insomnia, obesity, dry eyes, and other vision problems, etc.
Distracted driving.

2. Compared with gambling/drug/alcohol addiction, it is underrated.
It is not officially recognized as a disorder in DSM.

1. Reward learning
When we experience a reward or pleasure, our brain will release dopamine into the basal ganglia, which is responsible for our executive functions, behaviors, emotions, and memories.
It is this release that tells us that whatever we just experienced was wonderful and please do it again,
This chain of events would make us change our behaviors, provide motivation and affect our mood.

2.Incentive salience
It is a type of motivation created in the brain because it has developed an association between certain stimuli and reward.
It can happen when the individual tried to inhibit it but feels compelled to do it due to incentive salience. This compulsion to use is driven by unconscious forces and these forces are beyond our self-control.
Because repeatedly exposing to addictive substances can change the way our brain operates, becoming hypersensitive to addictive stimuli.

We are living in the digital age, the Internet has taken over. We are suffering from it and we are always surrounded by it.
e.g. Feeling inconvenient to go to CEB to select a shirt? No worries, buy it online. Need to order a pizza? Why pick up/call? Complete it on the app. Can't call over a friend to play video games with you at 3 am when you're suffering from insomnia. That's ok, there must be someone across the globe that is awake and ready to play.

Henry and colleagues, 2019: Differences in mobile phone use are indeed reflected in the structural white matter connectivity of our brains. higher connectivity between the vSTR and the vmPFC—a pathway often implicated in reward processing—was associated with Internet addiction, while higher vSTR connectivity to the dlPFC—an area involved in executive control over behavior—was associated with lower engagement.
vSTR: the ventral striatum
vmPFC: the ventromedial prefrontal cortex
dlPFC: the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex

1.The first step in treatment is the recognition that a problem exists.
2.Phone settings: Turning one's phone screen to grayscale mode, which helps reduce time spent on mobile phones by making them boring to look at.
Teenage mode: Restrictive time of use and content they approaching.
3.Increasing awareness: For example, in iOS 12 Apple added a function called "Screen Time" that allows users to see how much time they have spent on the phone. Use some apps or methods to inform users of their time spent on the Internet.
