Malcolm X was   also was one of the leaders of the Nation of Islam.  Starting out as a Christian that quickly changed when he stated that   Christianity was "the white man's religion" while  Islam was the "true religion of black mankind".  When Malcolm X made his personal conversion, Elijah Muhammad soon recognized his talents and made him a leading spokesperson for the Black Muslims. His life was not extremely long, but he was very important to the world, and black community. Brother Malcolm was a very large personality with- in the Nation of Islam (NOI), and in someways he out grew their rules and regulations. Malcolm found himself incarcerated for burglary, and larceny, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. While incarcerated, Brother Malcolm found himself unable to just fit in and was challenged to grow and be a better man by a cell mate. The cellmate was Mr. John Bembry, who was a member of the Nation of Islam, and huge influence to Malcolm. Encouraging him to read and to open his mind, starting with the dictionary. In the seven years, Malcolm served his sentence, he completed the dictionary, cover to cover. Along with consuming the dictionary Brother Malcolm learned about the Nation Of Islam from Bembry. According to Malcolm, the Honorable  Elijah Muhammad appeared to him and invited him officially into the NOI fold.
Although the NOI saved Brother Malcolm from the streets, they also were the ones who ultimately took his life. After a life changing trip to Mecca, Brother Malcolm had a change of heart and found himself at odds with the NOI , therefore cutting ties with them and starting his own organization named Afro-American Unity, on June 24, 1964. The OAU consisted of 53 African Nations and 22 million non-Muslims in America, giving them a political voice covering topics of restoration, reorientation, education, economics, security and self-defense. They also worked on a vocabulary change, by removing such derogatory terms as negro, integration and emancipation.
Unfortunately, Brother Malcolm was assassinated on February 21, 1965 only seven months after working to be a better man. Brother Malcolm X or Little passed his last breath at the age of 39 leaving behind Betty Shabazz and six daughters.
