There wasn't a lot of native slaves left, due to the Europeans bringing diseases and they were not resistant. They then turned to using European criminals but they were small in number for all the work that had to be done. The Portuguese had began to enslave Africans and brought them to america, they had been resistant to European diseases.

Our society still has strong racist values, and these values were brought from the Atlantic Slave Trade. The slave trade had brought diversity into the Americas, with the addition of African people. The Europeans had a strong disliking to the color black and had negative meaning attached to it. When they had first seen the African people they had associated these meanings to them.
