This is a basalt statue of Coatlicue, the Aztec mother-earth goddess and mother of Huitzilopochtli. This statue is 3.5 meters tall and dates from 1250-1521 CE.

Breakfast would usually be a maize porridge with chillies or honey, or tortillas, beans, and sauce. In the afternoon, the main meal would consist of tamales, beans, tortillas, and a casserole of squash and tomatoes.

But oldest of all were tamales, Mexico’s (and the world’s?) original pack lunch: maize dough shaped into balls, often with beans, chilies or meat in the center, wrapped up in maize leaves and steamed in a large clay pot.

The Mexica did have some sources of animal meat: mainly dogs, turkeys (for eggs too!), and ducks; and they hunted wild game - from deer, rabbits, hares, armadillos, and wild boars to opossums, gophers, iguanas, and tapirs.

This illustration of an eagle eating a snake on top of a cactus shows the legend of how an Aztec god marked the spot where these people would live. The symbol is still used on Mexico’s flag today.

Captives would be sacrificed to please the gods, which was common throughout Mesoamerican religion. While the Aztecs certainly increased the amount of sacrifice that occurred in the region, the true extent of how much it occurred is unclear. Spanish sources are almost certainly exaggerated.

North of Mexico City is where you’ll find the country’s most prominent site, and one of the world’s most important archaeological treasures. Teotihuacan was not actually built by the Aztecs, but rather discovered by them and subsequently occupied.
