  • What does international-mindedness mean to you?
    • It means to be concious and recognize that we are all part of a global society with different cultures and perspectives. Students need to be open and understandign of these differences to be able to adress important issues that concern us all as inhabitants of this planet.

    A global citizen is the one that is aware of the different contexts and points of view that other cultures have and withholds the skills to interact effectively in the purspose of building a better and more peaceful world.
    I think it is important to build an open mind in regards to global citizenship and the most effective way of doing so is facing the student to different realities, in my opinion this is how we get to achieve a sense of sympathy for other cultures which can in certain cases feel very remote or strange.

    I think biology can prepare students for global citizenship by allowing students to realize that we are all humans with the same needs it can make students aware of the struggles for humans in certain contexts and the responsibility to cooperate and contribute to the improvement of their lives.

What are the ways in which the texts, topics, or ideas in your classroom have benefited from contributions from other communities, cultures, and nationalities?
    For me it's very important in my classes not only to see the content in terms of concepts but also to understand the context in which humanity got to discover them. Sometimes students feel like scientific knowledge has always been there, but following the struggles of scientists to prove a theory has been very useful for me to show students the importance of dedication and cooperation.     In terms of science, international understanding and cooperation is essential, the interaction between the scientists all around the world is what allows scientific knowledge to expand the limits of our understanding in all the fields. What activities have you carried out in your class that have knowingly or unknowingly highlighted or celebrated international-mindedness?
    With the topic of heredity and the genetic code I proposed a discussion on the importance of cooperation within the students, with a previous research on the human genome project, we discussed about the difficulties faced by scientists to achieve this challenge and the rewarding feeling of completion as countries around the world contributed to the research.
