Washington had to cross the icy Deleware river the day after Christmas. General Ewing also a colonial leader moved on the other side of the river. Washington knew when they first got to Trenton they where going to be out numbered. He then planed to leave 500 of his 4500 troops to keep the campfires going at night while Washington planned a very risky night assault on the fort of Princeton. Since the British moved many of their troops from Fort Princeton to aid in the fight of Trenton, Fort Princeton didn't have many defenses.
