I am humbled by the honesty and vulnerability that some of my students have shown to me - telling me about struggles they face in their lives, letting me know what I can do that can help them succeed, sharing with me their fears and the places where they feel successful. In all but one (very special) case, I’ve told them no. I’m being kind about it, and let them know their options for making up those points a different way. No one has seemed mad about this, and I feel like I’m really supporting them in being better able to manage their workload. At least I hope I am. (The “special case” is a young woman who witnessed the recent knife attack on campus . . .
