Stage 1: Trust Vs. Mistrust

The first stage of Erikson's is the most important. This stage gives the child a first look at how the world is viewed. This stage is if the child feels safe and reliable from the caregiver. When I was a child, I went to daycare. My parents always told me that if anything was off on how I was acting they would ask questions. My parents began to not trust the daycare when things seemed off. My parents lost their trust when things weren't adding up. They eventually found a different daycare for me to go to. From the text, it says, "Then we consider children’s concepts of themselves, their insights into their social and moral worlds, their gender typing, and their increasing ability to manage their emotional and social behaviors."

Stage 2: Autonomy Vs. Shame and doubt

This is the second stage in the levels of development. This is the stage where children are gaining independence. When children feel like they are doing a good job about whatever the task may be they don't doubt themselves but when they get in trouble or yelled at they start to doubt themselves as if they are failing. My example from my childhood would be potty training. As a child, I wanted to try and do it on my own. Sometimes there would be accidents and I would get in trouble for not going to the bathroom. I would cry and be upset because I was trying to be independent by I felt doubtful. My parents tried to stop it, but I was okay to be on my own during this process. It just took time. This is what I would consider stage 2 of my life. From the text it says, " By age 3, they voiced firm likes and dislikes as well as new ideas
about themselves. “Stop bothering me,” Sammy said to Mark, who had reached for Sammy’s beanbag as Sammy aimed it toward the mouth of a large clown face. “See, I’m great at this game,” Sammy announced with confidence, an attitude that kept him trying, even though he missed most of the throws."

Stage 3: Initiative Vs. Guilt

This is the 3rd stage of development. This is an important stage as kids learn a lot during this stage. Kids should be encouraged to use their minds, use imaginative play, and learn different instructions from others. This is the stage where children are starting to learn what's real and what isn't. Different behaviors can show positive or negative results. As a child, I would play "school" and act like I was a teacher. I would have my "students" and take them outside for "recess" in my yard. Now that I look back on this, I would get so many stares from neighbors as I'm talking to my "students" outside with no one around. I never felt guilty for playing the way I did. From the text, it says, "As the word initiative suggests, young children have a new sense of purposefulness. They are eager to tackle new tasks, join in activities with peers, and discover what they can do with the help of adults. They also make strides in conscience development."

Stage 4: Industry Vs. Inferiority

This is the 4th stage of development. This stage to me is an important part of the school. Children are expected to start dealing with new skills and grasp a sense of achievement. If the child tends to fail, then can sense inferiority. When I was in elementary school, I had many friends to play with. I had my group of friends to play with during my free time. Whenever we wouldn't be following directions we would get in trouble. In this stage following the rules is important, along with disability. In the text, it says, "Between ages 2 and 6, first friendships form, in which children converse, act out complementary roles, and learn that their own desires for companionship and toys are best met when they consider others’ needs and interests."

Stage 5: Identity Vs. Role Confusion

This is the 5th stage. This stage deals with social relationships. This is the stage where teens search for personal identity through exploring their own beliefs and goals. This stage is a huge role as this will affect them as an adult. As a teen, I took a class in school where we did an assignment where I wrote about what I wanted to do when I grow up and what my goals were in life. That has helped me a lot being that it has pushed me to reach those goals and I am now doing what I want to be. From the text, it says, "Early childhood is, indeed, a time when children develop a confident self image, more effective control over their emotions, new social skills, the foundations of morality, and firm beliefs about gender, which they apply to themselves."

This stage is the 6th stage. This stage has to do with relationships with other people. These relationships are with someone other than family. Long-term relationships can result in a happy ending. I can currently relate to this stage. I have had a boyfriend from high school for almost three years and it has been a long-term happy commitment. It has been a way to see true love and know what happiness feels like when you add in another person into my life.

This is the 7th stage. Young adults create things that will create a positive change that will benefit others. This stage is less age-specific as where the other stages are very age-specific. Marriage, work, children can all occur at any point in middle childhood. When I get to this stage in life, I can help at local shelters and give back to my community to be generous to other people. In the book, it says, "Many studies show that having helpful or generous models increases young children’s prosocial responses. Models are most influential in the early years."

Stage 8: Ego Integrity Vs. Despair

This is the last and final stage. This stage is a reflection on life. This stage is where we can see what our accomplishments were and if we had a successful life. Being successful in this stage will lead to wisdom. Wisdom allows us to grasp a sense of closure and completeness. When I get older I can look back and see what I accomplished in life and what fear I may have had. I can grasp what my life looked like over a long period of time. In the text, it says, "Integrity results from feeling that life was worth living as it happened. Older people who are dissatisfied with their lives fear death."
