1. The answer to this question really depends on the person you ask. Some people may say it was a miss as a lot of people did not recognize the majority of his songs, while others may argue that he was able to promote his newer songs while also sending a political message. While I do agree that a lot of people did not recognize his music, I think his main goals were to bring more exposure to his newest album and send the political message, whether people responded well or not. He succeeded in getting his message out and many people watched the show in the end, so I believe it was a hit in the his eyes.

2. One of the key traits of this nation is its love for American Football and entertainment. The Super Bowl is the biggest football-related event as it crowns a winner and marks the end of the NFL season. In general, halftime shows in football games are meant to serve as entertainment while the players take a break halfway through the game. Naturally, football's biggest event of the year will likely have the most popular half-time show in the entire country. Performing at halftime in the Super Bowl is a huge honor and can help give exposure to the artist performing as well as the sponsoring organization behind it. Normally, popular artists that have already been proven to be staples are selected, but having them perform on the biggest stage in the US can help bring new fans and awareness to more people.

3. I do not watch the Super Bowl very often, but one of the more popular shows that I am aware of is Bruno Mars in 2014. Admittedly, I mainly listen to jazz standards and other sub genres of jazz, so many of the songs played at these shows I don't know. Bruno Mars is one of the few artists that I recognize, so I think my personal favorite is that show. I don't consider myself a reliable person to give accurate analysis on the halftime shows, but that is my opinion.

4. Similarly to the previous question, it is hard for me to choose the "worst" halftime show. If I had to say one, I would probably have to say the most recent one with Kendrick Lamar since I did not know the majority of the songs besides the last one, which is his most popular. Although my analysis may not be the best, I am mainly ranking these based off of how well I recognize them.

Professional associations help promote the interests of a profession by being somewhere that people of that profession can network through and rely on. Being a member of a profession lies mainly in the attitude you have rather than a title. By having this mindset, you can view the classes you take when securing education as crucial components to being an effective and influential music educator rather than viewing them as classes to fulfill credits. Viewing this career as something meaningful rather than a simple job can help your path to becoming an educator more enjoyable and significant.

When speaking English, we are using a string of words to formulate sentences that can be understood by others. If we just used random words in a random assortment, it would not sound like a sentence but simply words. Similarly, music can be defined as "organized sound". A string of randoms sounds cannot be considered music as it would not be organized or make sense. Musical syntax is a skill developed by speaking and/or listening to the language of music. In order to understand music and its sounds, having a basic level of musical syntax or ability to understand organized sound is necessary.

Concept formations are concepts that can help people think. They can help students on specific concepts that they may be struggling with such as melody. Students struggling with melody and understanding can be aided by a teacher showing students a melody like "Simple Gifts". The melody in this piece is quite simple and helps students, no matter the level, understand what a melody can be.

CH8: How does musician-like thinking about the song "Simple Gifts" differ from everyday, ordinary thinking about it?

Every field of study has a different way of thinking about things. With physicists, they are interested in the physical properties of sound while social scientists are interested in its effects on human behavior. Musician-like thinking focuses on how sounds can be manipulated and the tonal effects and composition that can be created with it. To many people, "Simple Gifts" is a nice melody and nothing else. To musicians, the melody is used to help understand how to create similar melodies that are simple yet sound melodic. Musicians use these pieces as a reference to understand how to write melodies or just how theory works.

CH8: Why is it very desirable for students in music classes to acquire favorable attitudes toward the subject?

It is desirable for students in music classes to acquire favorable attitudes toward the subject because it can affect their learning abilities and capabilities in music as a whole. The sole purpose of learning music is not to just drill sheet music and learn how to do it for a good grade. Students are able to understand and succeed in music more if they enjoy it or create some connection with it. Music that is enjoyed by students can be more effective than working on concepts and categories.

CH8: What factors affect the attitudes people adopt toward music?

A factor that can affect people's attitudes toward music can include familiarity with pieces. The book mentions how someone who likes Broadway musicals can more easily acquire a favorable attitude towards concert band pieces than someone who exclusively listens to rap or heavy metal. I found this particularly interesting because this is a very real situation that many music educators may find themselves in. This is a situation that has to be tackled and I think can help teachers plan accordingly ahead of time in order to accommodate a lot of people's preferences.

CH8: What does the word "relevant" mean in discussions of curriculum?

"Relevant" in discussions of curriculum means when the interests of the students and the requirements of valid subject matter conflict. This is a situation that can occur pretty often as many people do not view music as a "valid" course that is worthy of students' time. As music educators, our course is often viewed down upon and unnecessary and it is our job to be able to show and prove the value of music through our teachings.
