It seems that when the roller coaster goes up, there seems to be more potential energy. When going up, the roller coaster stores potential energy inside itself. Then, when the roller coaster goes down, it releases all the potential energy inside it. Causing the roller coaster to create kinetic energy. However, even though both kinetic energy and potential energy are changing, the time is still the same through out the ride.

Brief History of Roller Coaster

Built in the 17th century, one of the oldest roller coaster was made. Near the Saint Peters-burg, Russian Mountain, which was mainly constructed on hills with ice. This was built to a height between 70 feet (21 m) and 80 feet (24 m), with a 50 degree drop.

Soon, a mining company in Sumit Hill, Pennsylvania constructed the Mauch Check Gravity Railroad in the 1850's. With a 8.7 mile (14 km) downhill track and a brakeman-controlled. At first, it was used to bring coal and other materials to the mines and out. Then in 1872, the "Gravity Road" provided a thrilling ride for only 50 cent a ride.

Popularity grew on roller coasters in the 1880's. Roller coaster were being left to right, for example the Loop the Loop, and the Flip Flap Railway. However, these rides were dangerous, many passengers suffered whiplash. So, those roller coasters were dismantled and looping coasters had to wait for over half century for their comeback.

In 1912, a man name John Miller created the first under friction roller coaster. Then, roller coasters spread to amusement parks all over the world. For example Six Flags and Disneyland

Finally, in 1959, Disneyland introduced a new design break through in roller coaster with the Matterhorn Bobsled. The first roller coaster using tubular steel tracks. What makes this ride special? The steel tracks, the steel tracks can be bent in any direction, which allows designers to create loops, corkscrews, and many other maneuvers into their design.
