The plant that I chose to represent my understanding of plants roles in society and the environment is the beautiful Palm Tree. Not only is its presence a marker of life in a tropical climate, but it has multiple functions for human life and the environment. There are several different type of palm trees but the one I chose is fruit bearing, most likely coconuts. Native to the Maldives this plant producing coconuts, it functions as nourishment for humans and animals, the oil that can come from coconuts can be used for hair, skin and nails as we as for cooking. This palm tree also is a big resource when it comes to export and tourism for the people of the Maldives. When human life takes care of plant life, the world seems to be a little more balanced for all!

The process of photosynthesis is way more complicated than I initially thought. I selected this video to explain the photosynthesis because of the detailed animation of the process. While the process was being explained by the voice over, I was able to follow the words with action. I am a visual learner and this made it a little easier to understand. The clarity of each plant component and molecule made the words come to life. That along with the summary at the end made the process of photosynthesis better for me to understand.

Jewelweed
Scientific Name: Impatiens capensis
This angiosperm is native to the state of Georgia and I have selected this plant because of its beautiful color yet small size. This plant is blooms from late spring into fall and is a food source for hummingbirds, bees and butterflies. This is also a benefit to the Jewelweed its self because these creatures assist in cross pollination to continue the growth and longevity of this plant. I also read that this plant was and can be used as a natural remedy for athlete's foot when used homeopathically because of its anti-fungal properties.
Sources:
https://gnps.org/plants/jewelweed-impatiens-capensis/

The biome that I believe is in most danger is the tundra. More specifically, the alpine tundra. This biome has been affected by global warming in the sense of increased forest fires, floods and droughts in the region. Native Americans predicted this change and researchers have seen a steady increase in average temperatures rising for the past 30 plus years. It is possible to slow this environmental warming process by us humans limiting how we pollute the air and water sources. Small changes such as biking to work instead of driving and increasing our recycling, will help slow this danger of global warming and help preserve the tundra biome.

This diagram explains multiple impacts on the human population during the Neolithic Revolution. The rise of population can be seen as a positive effect because it strengthened the community by bringing larger numbers to complete the necessary work needed to keep the society functioning properly. However, this population increase can also be viewed as a negative impact because with larger numbers, brings more communicable diseases which could weaken the population due having to care for a large amount of sickly citizens. With continued improvements of primitive technology, this population was able to adapt and get adjusted to this new way of settled living.

The third agricultural revolution is also known as the "Green Revolution" was popularized by Dr. Norman Borlaug. When I think of an invention or innovation of this time, I think of Dr. Borlaug as an innovator. His cultivation and creating a disease resistant wheat crop, ultimately saved several countries, especially India, from famine. While studying in Mexico, through cross breeding and artificial selection, Dr. Borlaug was able to increase the production of wheat and also create higher yielding seeds. This not only increased production, but also built more items to trade and have a major item as input for globalization. Not only was he credited for fighting world hunger, Dr. Borlaug is also a Nobel Peace Prize Winner/Recipient and this adds to the reasons why I selected him as a representative of the Green Revolution.

My example of one of the most influential chemicals used in the world that derived from plants, is Penicillin. From Penicillium Chrysogenum , a fungus, was accidentally discovered in a laboratory by a Scottish scientist/bacteriologist, Dr. Alexander Fleming in 1928. It wasn't until 1940, that Penicillin was mass produced and incorporated in conventional medicine. This antibiotic was extremely skilled in killing the bad bacteria with out attacking the good bacteria or causing any further damage. Penicillin can cure many bacterial infections and was somewhat of hero during the second world war. Administering Penicillin during treatment of wounded soldiers in WW2, was reducing the death rate significantly due to the healing properties of this wonder drug.

When I look at this image, I think of overused, abused, depleted and deserted land also known as our earth. These are the words that will be used to describe our future if we are not proactive and make conscious efforts to save and sustain this earth. Although this picture of deserted hills was captured in Cameroon, Africa this will be a peek into the future as a reflection of the environment if things continue to go unchecked. Due to heavy farming practices of this land, erosion, mineral and nutrient deficiency has made this land suffer to the point of exhaustion and to the point beyond recovery. More regulations need to be in place in order for us to have sustainability in the world and it starts with small changes from individuals such as you and me!
