Film theory is taking apart a film's elements to analyze it. This goes further than film criticism because there are many aspects that are involved in this process. Film theories may look at a social issue but then they will also use specific film elements (script, directing, editing, sound, lighting, setting, cinematography, costuming, acting and so on) to present their research. They may also include some film history and/or compare films to previous films. Usually this work is lengthy requiring a a longer time to prepare than just a movie review for a website.

I would love to one day be able to understand the different elements of a film, but for now, I am happy to just enjoy and appreciate all the hard work that has been put into a great viewing experience.
