- Even though Jonas was worried about his assignment, it was never because he didn't faith in the system. The actual reason was that he had never made choices before,4 therefor he did not know himself well enough to think about what assignment he would be chosen to do. He was completely dependent on the elders knowing him better than he knew himself. - His dream brought up a lot of strong and confusing feelings, and in Jonas' community such feelings were always talked about and explained so no one go too passionate about it. With these dreams it was easier to just stop them all together then let people go through the normal cycle of life 
- This gets rid of the choice of emotion and how they react/act on their feelings to prevent things like choosing their spouses, disliking their assignments, being resentful, and more. It snowballed all into all these other choices being made for them.

- Jonas was now given a huge freedom/choice and because he had never been given a chance like this he wasn’t sure what to do with himself and began to second guess everything 
- Since choice was not existent in this community it was only given to those who the elders thought could handle it, which is why it was such a failure when the previous received had failed then and used her freedom, as what they say as, unwisely

- The color red: Jonas seeing beyond. Some examples of this would be Fiona's hair, the apple changing, and books on the shelf
- Also tying in with Gabriel would be having light eyes which symbolizes the rarity in individuality in the community and how these characters with this trait have a sense of lightness compared to the darkness around them. Gabriel being so different from other babies, Jonas being the knew receiver, and the Giver's eyes

- In the community of The Giver it is the opposite of our lives where we are taught to dress ourselves so we don't have to depend on other people for everything. This community relies on interdependence in order to function and they try to stop people from being to advanced or mature because it would throw off their order and systems.
