I would love to use stuffed animals in my classrooms because you can emphasize children to read aloud to the stuffed animals to help their language and literacy development. I also love stuffed animals and think they would make reading more fun.

I noticed that these teachers do a great job of creating a strong association between fun and reading. By incorporating holidays like halloween, cultural traditions, stuffed animals, and funny topics - the students learn to associate fun/happiness/humor/joy with reading which is so important!

I would love to use decorations that have to do with the characters, themes, or messages in the books. These decorations should help make the books more appealing for the students to get them excited about reading.

I like the "reading tree" because lighting it up can signify that reading is a special activity (especially for times like book talks and read alouds), and it can involve the students in making an interesting classroom environment.

Indications about new and exciting events that will happen in class that day light the reading tree and the decorations (stuffed animals and cobwebs). I also thought about giving out treats that are related to the books (ex: giving out Swedish fish for a book about an aquarium). Also having flags, books from TV shows/movies the children have watched, arts & crafts activities related to the book subjects, books to represent every students language and culture, notes of student recommendations and more! - Kiona Riddick

I really liked the use of reviews so students can see what their peers are enjoying. I thought that was a great way to drum up excitement.

I notice that the teachers have put a lot of decorations in the classroom, clearly organized books by genre into bins, and creatively allowed students to recommend books to their classmates on sticky notes.

I really want to make the reading space in my classroom comfy with bean bags, carpet, cute lights and lamps. I also love the idea of having stuffed animal characters around the reading area and other holiday/cultural decorations.

My teacher does not have a lot of decoration or structure to his reading bookshelves overall. I think he has a few labels on the shelves but the books are still a bit unorganized. I like how he has posters on the wall to encourage students to keep trying and not give up!
