Dear 6th graders. This year in English is really fun! We learn about so many things. One piece of advice I have is to always bring a notebook, you are almost always going to need at some point during class. Also, don't forget your book, you need that to. Sometimes it may seem like you get a lot of work but actually it's always pretty easy and fun. We also get to watch movies sometimes which is so fun. Being in 6th grade is a big adjustment, just make sure you do your homework and don't call out in class. Some of the best things you do are your poetry unit and also your gods unit. You learn so much and Ms. Duffy makes all your lessons so fun! Not related to english, 6th grade is a big change from 5th. First, you don't have CORE, which is a big change but to be honest after a while you don't miss it. Another thing is you get GRADES! It may seem really scary but if you do your work and pay attention your all good. As of homework, you should focus on time management. With the amount of work you need to make sure you divide your time evenly. Overall 6th grade is harder but still if one of the best years ever!

Advice from Ariella :)

Hi! My name is Ariella. I know that you're new to 6th grade, and I wanted to help you out. Also, it was kind of an English assignment, so... Anyway, there are many new things this year. Last year was a big change and this one will be too. You have different classes, (no Core classes) but also different groups of kids you have classes with. You're probably really confused on where to go and who to go with, but trust me, it gets so much easier. Soon, you'll know each class by heart and get to see more friends daily than in 5th grade. Although you don't have one particular teacher taking you to lunch and recess, you don't truly feel a part of you missing that's been there since pre-k. Those are all very large changes and milestones, but once you get the hang of it, and you will, it'll be the new normal. One thing you really have to focus on in 6th grade is time management. I know everyone is saying that to you and you're probably like "OMG enough already!". I know I was, but it actually really helps to be good at managing your time. You'll have more time to hang out with friends and your parents might even give you ice cream! Ok, well, they might not, but if you keep up with your assignments, it will show. Same goes if you aren't keeping up on assignments. Another thing you should rememer is to always bring your materials to class. The teachers will let it slide the first 1 or 2 times, but after that, they can and will get frustrated. (I've seen firsthand but don't tell anyone I told you :) You'll grow an inordinate amount in every subject, and that's not a bad thing! You'll thoroughly enjoy your time in English class and I hope the same for every other class. You'll learn to write poetry, read out loud, and so much more. Ms. Duffy's class really made my 6th grade experience fun and enjoyable, as well as helped me impress my parents and other teachers, which is always fun. I truly enjoyed my year as a 6th grader, and I'm sure you will too. Have fun, and be logical. That will help you exceed in the 6th grade.
-Ariella <3

Welcome to the 6th Grade! Some advice that I am here to give you is to do your homework. You have Ms. Duffy for English, which is great for you because you have one of the best teachers. But, in Ms. Duffy's class you have to do your homework, and that goes for any class in the 6th grade. Honestly, in the sixth grade just do your homework and you will be fine. Some more advice that I wish I had when I started sixth grade is always bring your notebook to class no matter what. In the morning when you come in to class, you do a warm up, this is written in your notebook. Also, in English you do class work, in your notebook. By Spring Break, my notebook had run out of pages, yes, that is how much you write in them. One thing I have to say to you is that you have two classes instead of one! You have a English / History grouping, and you have a Math / Science grouping. Yes this means that you will have to different classes. I know this seems like a lot but, trust me, it is not, by October at the longest you will get the hang of it. Sixth Grade seems like a lot, but you are going to have a great time next year!

Best,

Andrew

It Dear 5th graders, the time has come that you are now a 6th grader. How do you feel? Nervous, exited, prepared. Well don't worry. I am certain that this year will be exceedingly enjoyable. Some advice I recommend for 6th grade English class it to always remember to bring your book to class. At time it can be difficult to follow the lesson with out your book especially if you had to write something about what you read. Another thing I suggest you to do is to keep your English notes and annotations organized. Doing this will not only make writing future essay outlines easier but also makes finding an answer to a question easier. Also do your homework. If you do your homework when you are supposed to do it. Ms. Duffy will most likely review last night homework in class especially if it is reading homework. Anyways, I wish you the best of luck this year.
-Bridgett

Dear new 6th graders,
First off I want to tell you that you're going to have a great year. You might get a lot of work at times, but other times you might not have any work at all and just get to watch a movie in class. I would recommend to try to work on time management. As you get older and get more assignments, having good time management skills will become more and more imperative, and the earlier you achieve this skill the better. You never want to go home to relax and then realize you have 4 assignments due the next day. Also, you should always try to bring everything you might need for the next few classes with you so that you don't have to go up and down the stairs just before each class just to get your notebook or something.

When I first became a 6th grader, I thought it would be the hardest thing ever!

Dear future 6th graders, by the time you have read this letter, summer will probably be over. I hope you have had a wonderful time, for you're finally 6th graders!
There are certain expectations and behaviors teachers will expect from you. Transitioning from 5th grade to 6th grade may not seem like such a big deal, but you're transitioning from elementary school to middle school. There is a huge gap in between. Teachers will expect you to be much more mature and prepare you for the future. Also, you won't be having teachers take you to recess or classes. You might feel a bit more independent rather than feeling gloomy because you're not used to going off on your own. For English, you will be having Mrs. Duffy as your teacher. The rules such as don't call out and bring supplies will probably stay the same as when you were in 5th grade. In 6th grade, homework and assessments will be extremely important. From my experience, even if I miss out on one assignment, you might not know what to do the next day. If all the work seems overwhelming, look at your schedule and try to divide the time wisely to complete all the assignments. Overall, I hope you have a wonderful year in your first year of middle school and have the time of your life! :)

-Sincerely: Madison Cho

Dear incoming 6th graders, you should be happy, because you are in for a pleasant and fun ride in this English class. We read many good books throughout the year, which you will have fun with. During this class, you probably will also improve your writing by a lot. We write tons of things in this class, and I can't say that it is easy or fun at the moment, but looking back on the year, it was 100% worth it. Ms. Duffy will guide you through a fantastic year of fun. But there are some things which you should know about going into this English class. First, be prepared when you come to class. Every day in the morning, we do warm-up writing assignments, and if you are ready for them and finish on time, you can get water, get a snack, or go to the bathroom if you need to. Next, make sure to bring a good notebook! Your English notebook is the most important thing about the class, so don't just head over to staples and buy the cheapest notebook, but take your time to get something that you will actually want to use. Overall, English is a fun and excellent class that I think you will enjoy.

Best Wishes,
Zac Pollack

Hello!
My name is Madeleine, and I wanted to give you some advice for 6th grade. Firstly, as simple as it sounds, always bring a pencil! (Mainly because it's really embarrassing to ask for one in the middle of class...) Also bring a notebook. That'll be useful (and it'll also be embarrassing to ask for paper in the middle of class). But aside from that, English is going to be great! Yes, it'll be a bit harder, but it'll be worth it. We will read many good books over the year and learn a lot of vocab and grammar. With that said, I'm sure you'll have a great year in 6th grade English class.
Best,
Madeleine

Dear 6th graders,
I would like to give you some advice for the coming year. 6th grade is going to be amazing in many ways but there will more homework than you had in 5th grade. So make sure that you always complete your homework on time and don't procrastinate because there will be more homework to do than you think. Another piece of advice that I would like to give is is to plan ahead and always be prepared with everything you need for your upcoming classes ( pencils, notebook, binders ETC.) because you can't always go to your locker between classes. Overall though you are going to have a great year and you will really enjoy 6th grade and you will learn a lot.

Good Morning!
Sixth grade is a great year, and I have full confidence that you will have a blast. Sixth grade is a year to remember and cherish. Sixth grade can be tough throughout different times, but just be ready and open for change. If you do this, Sixth grade will become a piece of cake and the year will fly by. Secondly, make sure to know your schedule before hand and always come prepared. English is one of the most fun units because you will read many different books, expand our vocabulary, and learn to write and explain themes, summaries, etc. But, don't forget to bring your book and notebooks!!! Without these, it will be hard to focus, follow along, and stay on top of the class. One more piece of advice; don't be too hard on yourself. Sixth grade can be a big step from sixth grade with the schedule change and all, but remember, you can do it!!! I know that you will enjoy sixth grade, so make the best of it while you can!!!
Sincerely,
Maison Dean

I hope that you had a great summer and now you are ready to learn. this year the teachers will expect more than last year because becoming a 6th grader is a bigger deal than you think.
Another thing that you should be aware of is not having core.
