The Freedom Monument is a monument built in memory of those who died in the freedom struggle of Latvia in Freedom Square in the center of Riga. It is a symbol of Latvian statehood, unity, independence and freedom of the Latvian people.The monument was built in 1935 on November 18. The height of the monument is 42m.

House of blackheads

The House of blackheads, which as a luxurious architectural pearl currently adorns one of the main squares of the Old Town, was built at the beginning of the 14th century. The town councillors and merchant guilds of that time met in this house, led meetings, signed contracts, held receptions, and also celebrated holidays. Initially, - in 1334 - the building was given a completely different name - it was called the New House. It was supposed to play a significant role in the business development of that time, so it was built in the city center opposite the medieval town hall.

One of the oldest medieval castles still visible in Latvia is Turaida Castle - it was built in 1214. It is rare for a building in Latvia to be placed in such an impressive landscape - the castle rises above an 80-meter-high tongue of land, and from its 27-meter-high tower there is a wonderful view of the forested Gauja valley. Turaida Castle was built as the bishop's/archbishop's palace of Riga and has seen as much warfare as rarely any other medieval castle in Latvia. Since 1776, the castle has not been inhabited and gradually turned into ruins, until in the second half of the 20th century, its restoration was started for the purposes of tourism and cultural education. Today, the Turaida Castle complex is one of the most interesting and impressive cultural monuments of Latvia, it is also considered to be the best archaeologically researched medieval castle in the Baltic States.

History of the Rundales Palace

The name of Rundāle comes from the German place-name Ruhenthal (Valley of Peace).
The Rundāle Palace built during the 16th century was located on the northern side of the pond. It can be seen in the design of F. B. Rastrelli as a small square field with towers in the corners. Rundāle Manor was already created at the end of the 15th century. It belonged to the Grotthus family from 1505 to 1681 and the palace was mentioned in the list of Livonian castles in 1555. Facade finishing components have been found in the territory of the palace – cast fragments and fragments of coats of arms carved in stone dating to the middle of the 17th century. In 1735 Ernst Johann von Biron bought the Rundāle property for 42 000 thalers.

bridge over the Gauja

The bridge over the Gauja River in Sigulda was opened on July 23, 1937, but the idea to build a bridge in Sigulda arose already at the beginning of the 20th century. Initially, several versions of the bridge were created, but as the final version, it was decided to build a bridge with three-jointed monolithic reinforced concrete arches (outer arches 36 meters long, the middle one - 37 meters) and transitional frame-shaped trestles on each bank. The author of the bridge superstructure project is professor Kārlis Gailis, but the supports and foundations were designed by K. Tomels. 463 wooden piles have been driven into the foundations of the bridge's supports. Its total length is 153 meters, and the height above the river is 16.5 meters. The bridge over the Gauja, minus the overpasses connecting the shore, was blown up by the Red Army in the summer of 1941 while retreating. The bridge was restored in its previous form by Latvian road workers in 1950. It should be emphasized that the Sigulda bridge is the only one in our country with such a monolithic reinforced concrete solution

The Ieriķi Watermill Park territory is home to several waterfalls, one of which is even the third highest in Latvia. Melderupe is a wild salmon river. Every autumn, just as the average temperature drops to +6 o C, it’s possible to witness a salmon run, when salmon brave the highest waterfall to reach the spawning grounds.

The Ieriķi Watermill Park exhibits the walls of the old watermill, which are more than 350 years old. They first appeared on a map of Ieriķi Manor in 1681, and initially were a part of its household. In 1924, Jorģis Ziemelis purchased the plot. His progeny are still taking care of it, including the watermill. Its waterwheel, called Jorģis to honour the first owner, is one of the largest in the Baltics and has restarted its endless journey.

Līču-Laņģu Sandstone Cliffs

The Līču-Laņģu sandstone cliffs is approximately one kilometer long and is located on the left side of the primeval valley of the River Gauja. It cannot be seen from the River, but is located very close to it.

Its maximum height is ~30 m. 6km long walking trail is built in the surrounding area. Around 20 springs are flowing out of Līču–Laņģu Cliffs, due to which caves of various length and hollows of various sizes have been shaped. In the northern side of Līču–Laņģu Cliffs, there is a larger cave formed by a spring, and after the ceiling fell down, it turned into an extraordinary ravine with 8 m high, steep walls. On the side of the ravine, there is an interesting cave with three passages. Overall there are eight large springs, nine caves and niches.

Alūksne new Palace

The Alūksne New Palace was built in the Tudor Neo-Gothic style from 1860 to 1864, by the order of Baron Alexander von Fitinghoff, and is one of the most remarkable monuments of late Tudor Neo-Gothic architecture in Latvia. It is thought that the chief architect of the palace is Johan Daniels Felsko, who was the chief architect of Riga. The construction works are supervised by Paul Benjamin Polinaus, a master builder from Prussia. The local builder Roberts Millers is also mentioned in the Alūksne church books in 1862. In the layout of the new palace, all the rooms are grouped on both sides of the great hall and form a complex external configuration. Each group of rooms tends to stand out on the facade as a part of each volume. This link between the organic planning and the external image indicates a progressive time in the development of the spatial structure and outlines the trends that developed later - in the Art Nouveau period. Above the main entrance of the castle, under the tower, the coat of arms of the Fitinghof family can be seen - a fox as a symbol of wisdom and cunning and three shells on the shield. the main facade faces north, with a view of Alūksnes lake. The interior of the castle hides artistic wall and ceiling paintings of various architectural styles, some of which were created in the 19th century.
