         <title>

This
article discusses a randomized control trial to determine the efficacy of a
home exercise program versus a home exercise program in combination with a
robot-assisted intervention to improving quality of life and depression for
people suffering after stroke. Both interventions have been delivered via
telerabilitation. The HEP group were instructed in a customized program using his/her
affected UE for 3 hrs/day, 5 days/week for a total of 8 weeks in a 12-week
period. The robotic device and HEP group were prescribed an identical dose of
intervention but theres included use of The Hand Mentor Pro robotic device. A
device that assists movement of the wrist and fingers. The outcome measures were
the SIS (Stroke Impact Scale) and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies
Depression Scale (CES-D). The telerehabilitation consists of weekly phone calls
and data from the robot-assisted device that will be transmitted to the
Mentor-Home website, allowing the therapist to tweak the settings of the robot
to increase the challenge for the participants. The results indicate that both
interventions improved QOL and depression outcomes less than 6 months after
stroke, but both interventions were very similar outcomes. The paper then goes
on to say that clinicians may choose the intervention based on factors such as
patient comfort with technology and room for the device. &amp;nbsp;One thing that I think is a benefit of the
robotic therapy is that is provides a lot of sensory and proprioceptive
feedback with very little distal movements, which is better then seen in
typical HEP.

         <description><![CDATA[<div>There are several different ways women can discover that they have breast cancer, and this article outlines those detection methods along with how often they were used during the years between 1980 and 2003. The NHIS (National Health Interview Survey) gathered data via in-person interviews in order to gather the population of women surveyed in this study. 17,425 females had participated in the NHIS interview and based on responses, the number was narrowed down to 361 breast cancer survivors. Conductors of the survey then asked these women how their cancer was detected. Detection methods included finding the cancer by accident, finding the cancer by doing a self-examination, finding by doctor during regular exam, found via mammogram, and the option to not respond was also given. Breast cancer detection methods did not vary based on year of diagnosis or race. The detection methods did, however, vary based on age at diagnosis and income. Those women who were older or who had lower incomes tended to detect their cancers by mammography more than those women who were younger or who had higher incomes. Once the data was gathered, researchers found that 43% of women detected their breast cancer through mammogram while the other percentage of women used other methods. Since mammography is often emphasized in breast cancer education programs, researchers were wondered why only 43% of cases were detected by mammogram.          <title>The research was carried out at Tri-Service General
Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. Nai-Wen examined the effects of an early postoperative
walking exercise program on health status in lung cancer patients recovering
from lung lobectomy. Nai-wen’s and his group purpose of study was to explore
how walking exercise affected and improved the pulmonary function and physical
function over time with lung cancer patient after accommodating a surgical
treatment. This study will be helpful and useful in the main topic as an
international examination for lung cancer patients although it was in a
different culture. Lung cancer and other malignant tumors was the main cause of
death in Taiwan since 1982. That reason drove a strong desire to know and learn
something about their treatment technique after a surgery (Nai-Wen Chang, 2014).</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In a study by Borowitz et al. (2015) the improvements in weight and BMI (body mass index) of cystic fibrosis patients with the<em> G551D&nbsp; </em>mutation on ivacaftor were assessed (Borowitz et al., 2015). It is important that the regulation of protein channels opening and closing is normal in order to transport chloride and bicarbonate across the apical membrane of epithelial cells. The <em>G551D</em> mutation affects the CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator)&nbsp;by not allowing enough ions to transfer across the protein channel to reach the cell membrane. The oral CFTR potentiator, ivacaftor, increases the probability of the CFTR channel opening. Two hundred and thirteen patients were randomized and given either ivacaftor 150mg or the placebo every twelve hours for forty eight weeks. Weight, height, and BMI were taken at day fifteen, week eight, and then every eight weeks thereafter which gave the final result that the nutritional status of the patients on ivacaftor were improved.          <title>Multiple Sclerosis</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This article discusses a study that was conducted over a three year time frame, in which researchers studied the neuropsychiatric status in people with Multiple Sclerosis. The researchers goal was to test the hypothesis that Multiple Sclerosis patients suffer clinical declines and to determine what neurological areas suffer most from MS related injury (Roy, Rodgers, Drake, Zivadinov, Weinstock-Guttman, &amp; Benedict, 2015). Through the use of a variety of self or informant reports and questionnaires they asses different areas such as depression, fatigue and neuropsychological symptoms (Roy et al., 2015).&nbsp; Compared to the healthy controls, researchers found that MS patients rated higher on tests evaluating decline in physical symptoms but reported very little to no changes in personality. over the three year period.          <title>When babies are born, there are many different tests, grouped together as newborn screenings (NBS), to ensure they are healthy. One test they undergo is screening for congenital hypothyroidism (CH). This article focuses on the different ways of screening for CH, how effective they are in diagnosing children with CH, and how well each state follows-up on their patients. They took seven states from the Midwest (Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, and Indiana) and compared the different types of screening each state uses, how effective they are, and if they need to change their ways of screening. Clinicians and parents of children diagnosed with CH through NBS were asked to participate in this study. This was a long term study because they wanted to see if the screening was effective and also because they used mailed surveys, so responses took time. Children with CH were better helped and diagnosed when there was a follow-up program. Because of these findings, a few of the states implemented follow-up programs to help improve diagnosis and improve the child&#39;s health.</title>

         <title>Asthma in Children</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The most common chronic illness in children is asthma, and the prevalence has continued to increase along with levels of air pollution (Gasana, Dillikar, Mendy, Forno, &amp; Ramos Vieira, 2012).&nbsp; The authors of this article conducted a study to determine the association between motor vehicle pollutants and asthma in children. The researchers used 420 meta-analysis studies previously published to determine to which pollutants have been researched the most in relation to asthma and wheeze. The severity of exposure to nitrogen oxides, particulate matters, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and ozone was then studied in relation to hospitalization and asthma diagnoses from physician billing and hospital discharge records.          <description><![CDATA[<div>In this article, the aim of the study by Ellis-Hill and Kang (2015) was to see how people, who are affected by Parkinson’s disease, can live their lives successfully. Usually in the case of diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, the value of life is diminished and those that suffer from this disease have a diminished self-efficacy and may suffer from other psychological issues such as depression and anxiety. The study had found that the subjects, whom had more education on the aspect of their disease, had a higher rate of being able to live successfully with their disease.          <title>The article I chose focuses on the Zika virus in patients from Brazil. The authors mention that this illness has not been around since the late 1940&#39;s, but has made it&#39;s recent comeback. The Zika virus originated from mosquito bites. They think this can be the reason why this disease is so widespread. In Brazil, they ran tests on nine people who had the illness and were willing to further their research. Out of these nine, seven were pregnant women. The scientists concluded that this virus affects pregnant women more often that anyone else. So to me, those seven women were probab the focal point of the testing.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Acute Myeloid Leukemia is a very proactive cancer that has many outcomes. Physicians relied on clinical features of the patient and their disease to determine the treatment for each patient. Determining weather the risk is favorable or unfavorable, is based souly on&nbsp; cytogenetics. Despite the advances they have made with cytogenetics, the room to determine the clinical outcome, with patients with AML , stays limited. Recent years have shown us advances in sequencing mutations in AML. Being able to identify the specific genes is helping them determine prognosis. The methods they will use for this are, patient cohort, genetic analysis, and statistical analysis. Patient cohort created a study looking 197 patients with AML and seeing what their prognosis was and see if they can identify the cytogenetic risk. Genetic Analysis is determining the mutation and cytogenetic risk and ranking these risks. Statistical analysis is using previous data to decide what they think might happen.          <title>Multiple Sclerosis </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This article is about a study that was conducted to see if there is a correlation between cognitive functioning and daily functioning for people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). For this study researchers found people diagnosed with MS and people without MS for a control group. Both groups had participants with varying levels of education and in differing states of physical shape. The researchers tested both groups cognitive and daily functioning through different tests that measure both cognitive and physical functioning. The results showed a correlation between cognitive functioning and physical functioning for those with MS and no or little correlation for those without MS. These findings supported the hypothesis that cognitive functioning issues do tend to affect physical daily functioning in people diagnosed with MS. Although the findings were pretty clear cut, there were limitations.          <title>Crohn&#39;s Disease       The article I chose is about emergency surgery that can be needed for people who are diagnosed with Crohn&#39;s disease. The study in question involved 38 patients and it states within the article that 17 of those 38 had to undergo emergency surgery for the disease. Crohn&#39;s disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the intestines, more commonly the small bowel along with the beginning of the colon. Symptoms can include chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, and rectal bleeding.              </title>

From the years 1960 and 2010 the prevalence of obesity among adults in the United States increased from 13.4% to 35.9%.&nbsp; The estimated public cost equates to an<br>average marginal cost of $27 per year, per adult for a one-unit increase in BMI foreach adult in the U.S. population.          <description><![CDATA[<div>A study was conducted to test the effect of two time efficient high intensity exercise interventions on exercise capacity, glycemic control and other cardiometabolic risk factors in patients with type 2 diabetes. 21 people with type II diabetes were assigned to low volume high intensity interval exercise or extremely low volume sprint interval exercise three times a week for 12 weeks.          <title>Obesity in the workplace: Impact on Cardiovascular disease, Cost, and utilization of care. &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;Although there are various health diseases and illnesses
that impact United states communities, there is one disease that can be the
culprit to various conditions. Obesity is known to be the underlying cause to
conditions like cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension and diabetes.
Considering this condition, there are many ways in which obesity not only
creates stress in a person’s life physically but also financially. Throughout
this article, it is discussed how obesity can make an impact in the workplace environment
throughout the united states. The study was done at a supplier company
that has various manufacturing sites throughout the country. Employees were
given a health risk assessment and then evaluated to measure the amount of ‘Episodes”
or treatments for a certain illness (cite). The cost of the total amount of
payments for the treatment was also evaluated. The main purpose of the study
was to examine the cost of illnesses in the work place and confirm that obesity
should be a focus of prevention(cite). After assessing the results of the
study, it was concluded that &amp;nbsp;employees that were considered obese, had a
higher cost for their health treatments. This due to the fact that obesity is a
key risk factor for various other conditions. The cost for employees health treatments and health care visits showed &amp;nbsp;significantly higher than employees that maintained a normal-average body weight
(cite). &amp;nbsp;In conclusion, the focus on
preventing obesity will not only improve the physical lives of hundreds of
employees across the country, but also decrease the cost of care for each
individual.&amp;nbsp;</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This article discusses the difference in survival rate and quality of care for those diagnosed with breast cancer and living in poverty in United States verses Canada. The study was done over several years, 1996 through 2011. The two areas studied were California and Ontario. It was hypothesized that Canadian women with breast cancer who live in such high-poverty neighborhoods with experience better care and survival rates compared with their counterparts in the United States (Gorey, K. M., Richter, N. L., Luginaah, I. N., Hamm, C., Holowaty, E. J., Guangyong, Z., &amp; Balagurusamy, M. K., 2015). Several different methods were used to compare findings such as sampling the historical cohorts of both areas. Women with malignant breast cancer were randomly selected from three geographic areas in Ontario and California between 1996 and 2000 and compared the health records of the patients selected. It was found that the survival rate among the women in Ontario (78.5%) seemed somewhat better than that of women who were uninsured or publicly insured in California (70%) (Gorey, K. M., Richter, N. L., Luginaah, I. N., Hamm, C., Holowaty, E. J., Guangyong, Z., &amp; Balagurusamy, M. K., 2015). Although it was found that early diagnosis in both areas were roughly the same, 64.5% in California and 65% in Ontario, who were privately insured, Ontarian women were 12% more likely to be diagnosed early than were the uninsured or publicly insured women in California. Overall, with all the findings in this study it was found that women living in poverty with breast cancer receive better care and are more likely to survive in Canada than in the United States (Gorey, K. In order to study this they gathered several hundred asian college students from multiple locations in the United States. The research conducted did not prove that there was a correlation between different ethnicities and the how obese they are.          <title>Parkinson&#39;s Disease</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The article begins with a description of Parkinson's Disease (PD) as a whole. PD is a neurological disorder of the central nervous system. Many of the signs and symptoms develop and progress slowly over time. These include bradykinesia, tremors, and rigid movement. PD is believed to be caused by the dopamine producing nerve cells within the brain dying prematurely. This causes the brain to ineffectively communicate with the muscles of the body. Treatments for PD include Carbidopa-Levodopa, deep brain stimulation (DBS), and exercise. Carbidopa-Levodopa is typically an oral tablet taken three or four times a day. DBS is a treatment used when oral medication is ineffective. It is a surgery in which the brain is stimulated with different electric currents in an effort to make PD have less effects on the patient.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Hypertension is the leading risk of premature death, stroke and heart disease around the world (Joffres, Falaschetti, Gillespie, Robitaille, Loustalot, Poulter, McAlister, Johansen, Baclic &amp; Campbell, 2013). The authors of this article conducted this study to compare hypertension prevalence, awareness, treatment and control in England, the USA, and Canada. The study shows the correlation that hypertension has with stroke and ischaemic heart disease mortality rates. It was conducted through non-institutionalized population surveys over the years 2006-2010 from an age range of 20-79; England was surveyed in 2006, the USA was surveyed from 2007-2010, and Canada was surveyed from 2007-2009. England and Canada used automatic oscillometric devices in their surveys and the USA used mercury wall sphygmomanometer models to measure blood pressure. The prevalence of hypertension is lowest in Canada (19.5%) and higher in the USA (29%) and England (30%). Hypertension awareness is close to 80% in the USA (81%) and Canada (83%) and lower in England (65%).
