It was a large religious movement that went through the United States in the 18th and 19th century. During this, preachers rejected a Calvinist belief that there was predetermination and eternal damnation. Instead, they spoke about how it was an individuals choice, saying that people must improve themselves and society.

By Ruth Ann

Westward Expansion: Politically and physically, how did the United States expand the country?

The United States made many major deals and treaties to physically expand the country from the early to mid 1800s. They began in 1803 by buying the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States. America grew slightly with the Convention of 1818 when it was decided that the border would run along the 49th parallel. Once again in 1819, America was expanded to include Florida. Eventually, Americans began to make the long journey to push and settle West in places such as California and the Oregon Territory.
In addition to physically, the United States was expanding politically as well. Most notably, The Monroe Doctrine was a set of principles that discouraged any foreign power to try to move in on the Western Hemisphere. The goal was to establish America as a force that won't be budged.

--Liz Kirchner

A prime example of this was Sojourner Truth a woman who after being slaved the first 30 years of her life decided to make change.

One of the biggest ideas that was a product of Westward Expansion was Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny was a nationalistic view that the United States was supposed to stretch westward and southward until it obtained all land coast to coast. The Americans wanted all land from Spain, including Texas. In addition, they didn't want to share the Oregon Territory with the British. They believed it was obvious that they should expand all the way to the Pacific.
--Liz Kirchner

An important person in the Westward Expansion of the United States was Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was the main drive behind The Louisiana Purchase. He wanted to defend the country from French invasion or colonies so he sent James Monroe to France to buy New Orleans and West Florida. Luckily, France wanted to get sell all their land that stretched past the Mississippi River. Buying the Louisiana Territory for $15 billion, Jefferson doubled the size of the United States. The growth of the country also helped to start a growth of patriotic pride. In addition, Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore the new territory.
--Liz Kirchner
Outside Source
http://www.nevadaoutdoorschool.org/InterpretiveKits/ET/KeyPlayers.pdf

Charles Finney was one of the most influential revivalists of the Second Great Awakening, he traveled around, trying to convince people to choose god. He played a huge role in converting more people to Christianity by making new methods and changing the church so it was improved and more appealing for people. Things he added were the belief that you could be reborn, yet said that Calvinism couldn't be reborn for it was "an abomination to god." He also let women mix in public church gathering.

Outside Source: https://goo.gl/QLNtZH

The whole ordeal sparked when Zachery Taylor and John C. Fremont violated Mexico's territorial rights. How they did this was, general Zachery Taylor was prepping his troops to blockade the Rio Grande, as he was proposed to by James Polk to do so in the hope that Mexico will attack them, thus giving a reason for the U.S to fight Mexico. while that was happening, John C. Fremont was leading a exploration group in Mexico's Alto California province. At this point Mexico was fed up, they attacked General Taylor's blockading troops killing 9 U.S troops near Matamoros.

Polk then sends a war message to congress, though its validity was questioned by people like representative Abraham Lincoln. Congress and the House of Representatives still approved of the war.

It is important to note that the relationship between Mexico and the U.S at that time was a bit hostile because of the Texas revolution in 1836. Also, Most of the public agreed with the idea of the U.S going to war with mexico, many volunteers flooded the recruiting centers. The South especially favored the war, they thought this war would bring more power for them in congress and slavery if Texas was annexed. Those who apposed were anti slavery Whigs and abolitionists, they thought that this was something planned by the south in order to increase their power.

Another result of the Second Great Awakening was that enslaved people also started going to church, although a lot were segregated in the church, they saw the religious views as hope for equality.
By Ruth Ann
