Explore
  1. What have you already tried? 
  2. What are you school priorities? How does the Mastering Number programme fit in? For example, introducing the key resource - the rekenrek will this be used in mastering number and your main lessons? Will you use it instead of another resource so as not to overload? 

Prepare 
  1. Consider your current provision, do you need to make any adaptations?
  2. How will you ensure all staff have the same vision? For example, are the Year 3 teachers prepared for the Year 2 children coming up to them? Are they aware of what the children are learning on mastering number in Year 2 and what the expectations should be in terms of calculation using the automaticity and the facts that they’ve developed. 
  3. When and how will the mastering number sessions fit into your timetable? It’s recommended that the Mastering Number programme is a separate session. If you can’t fit in an extra 10/15 min session, it’s recommended that you shorten the main maths lesson rather than abandon the programme. The research shows that it has far greater impact shortening the main maths lesson rather than not doing it because you can’t it in. The main maths lesson become more focused and this additional session supports children’s mathematical development alongside the main lesson.

Will ALL of your children be able to access the learning in these sessions? Mastery is characterised by a belief, that by working hard, all children are capable of succeeding at mathematics. 
What could you do to ensure this happens - before or during a session?
What systems could you consider putting in place to ensure all children keep up? For example, pre-teaching/ intervention groups.
