Evidence: Prospero's fairy, Ariel, has immense power that can be used to do practically anything, but he is still under the power of Prospero until he chooses to free him.

Elaboration: Ariel is incredibly powerful in the first chapter. He can achieve practically anything through his magic. However, Prospero still has power over him because he chooses when to see him free. This is because of Prospero's status. Even though Ariel has all the strength and all the power he is still under control of Prospero because he is psycholicaly in a higher position than him. Individual power gets ignored in the lue of systems involving different levels of status. Even if a townsperson is unbelievably knowledgable and strong they will never be able to have the power of a king. Therefore, is systems of hierarchy, status is more important than personal skills and strengths.

Evidence: Prospero purposefully started the storm and killed many men in order to have his brother crash on his island. 

Elaboration: Having more knowledge than others around you allows one to influence people who are less knowledgeable in a positive or negative way. Knowledge is so powerful because it gives influences. When one is less knowledgeable of a situation they have nothing to counter the influence of someone who is more knowledgeable than them. In the book, we see this as Miranda is forced to believe that Prospero is doing what is morally correct because of her lack of knowledge and her natural innocence. Evidence: 
Prosper's perspective is that he is justified in capturing Alonso with his storm.
Prospero thinks it is the right decision to manipulate Miranda with Ferdinand.
Ariel justifies causing the storm because he is trying to earn his freedom. 
 
Elaboration: People's perspectives get altered for themselves in order to justify wrong actions. For example, in all of the given evidence above the characters believe that they are in the right with their decisions. However, they are not looking at the broader picture and realize that they are helping themselves at the cost of harming others. Evidence: Antonio was considered highly powerful where he originally lives, but on the remote island he lost his power to Prospero. 

Elaboration: People feel confident in their power without realizing that the power is contingent on where they are using it. Therefore when they are in a new location, the power does not fully transfer over. Antonio had complete power over Prospero originally. However, when he is caught on the island, Prospero gains control over him. Power is situational to what one has around them. Meaning, when their situation is altered, the same levels of power will likely not transfer over.

Act 3 quote:
As Ferdinand and Miranda joyfully profess their love to one another, Prospero thinks of it differently as he states "So glad of this as they I cannot be" in reaction to their plans upon marriage(Shakespeare 3.1.111).
