Civics is: understanding the foundations of America's government.

I believe this is an important civics idea because many people know what their rights are and how we use them, but not many take the time to really think about why we have those rights, how we got them, and what effect they have on how our government runs. I think understanding rights and how to use them is just as important as understanding the origins of those rights and how they came about.

I chose assignment 3.1 to represent my evidence and demonstrate my understanding of the foundations of America's government because in order to complete the assignment, I had to conduct research into some of the driving causes behind Enlightenment thinking and how Enlightenment thinkers influenced the Founding Fathers, resulting in things like natural rights being written into America's Constitution.

I believe this is an important civics concept because it plays a key role in voting and knowing who you're voting for and what their responsibility will be. I feel that someone who just votes for whoever they want without regard to political part, position, or which level they are at harms democracy more than helps it, even if the person is participating in politics.

I chose assignment 4.13 to demonstrate my understanding of the levels of the American government because not only did I have to research the roles of each branch in each of the different levels of government (federal, state, and county/city), but I also had to research different government agencies that were managed by the different levels of government.

I thought that this civics idea is of import because especially in Hawaii, voter turnout at the polls are very low. I also know that people, especially with all of the racial issues going on in the world right now, need to know their own rights and the limitations to those rights.

I chose assignment 5.2 to serve as my evidence because I feel like this essay captures the whole concept of the limitation of an individual's rights and it brings up a good point that's especially relevant in today's issues regarding racial tensions. It explains the issue in an easy-to-understand way for people who do not have a good understanding of civics and rights.

If I were to give someone advice on how to succeed in this class, I would tell them that managing your time is super important and that the assignments aren't as intimidating as they look. I know that I was intimidated by some of the assignments and I put off doing them as a result but when the deadline approached and I could not wait any longer to finish it, I realized that the project was not nearly as hard as I thought it was.
