Ned Kelly was born in 1855, and lived a life of poverty growing up in the north-east of Victoria, Which at the time, was under a conflict involving corrupt law enforcement and squatters.

As he grew older, Ned would partake in various robberies, but would remain unnoticed until age 15 (1870), when "he received six months hard labour in Beechworth jail for assault and three years for horse stealing" (Darlington, R. 2012, pg. 166). Constable Fitzpatrick claimed that he was assaulted by Ellen Kelly via shovel, and that Ned had shot him.

Ellen was later jailed, much to Ned and Dan's dismay. They were willing to give themselves up for her freedom too. The chose to hide in the Wombat Ranges, but were later hunted down by 4 police men; 3 constables and a sergeant, only one of the policemen survived Dan and Ned's gunfire.

Two more people joined The Kelly gang, Steve Hart and Joe Bryne. All four of the met up at the Glenrowan station, and waited for the train.

A few things went wrong however, One of the hostages Ned so he could leave and tend to his ill wife, Ned let him leave, resulting in him tipping off the police. As well as this, The train carrying the police forces was already informed of the derailing up ahead, as a previous train had already crashed. Instead of fleeing, The Kelly gang chose to stand their ground and hold up a hotel.

Fighting ensued for 12 hours, but eventually, Joe Bryne was shot dead, and Dan and Steve chose suicide over being captured, Ned was shot in the legs several times, falling down and crying out a surrender.

If his train plan succeeded, he may have killed many more people too.
