Character Revelation: Mandy

A great example of a character revelation is in a film called Mandy, which I have watched and studied multiple times. The main character Red is in a realtionship with Mandy, and it is clear that he is in love with her and caress for her, as he is affectionate and they discuss their favourite things and their future together.

After a terrible incident (without spoiling the plot), Red devopls int a anger-fueld rage that increasing develops into this psychopathic killer. We see Red as this loving and carrying man, but after something drastically happens, his inner self opens up and we see him go to any means possible to get revenge, whether that may be taking drugs to gruesomely murdering somebody.

I am very fond of Red’s character revelation as we seen his true nature, and we are able to see what he is capable of. He isn’t afraid of destroying his loving and affectionate nature, he would rather ruin his life and get his revenge, than go back to the way he was.

Reference:

Cosmatos, P., 2018. Mandy (2018) - IMDb.
Documentary Notes: The Death of Kevin Carter

This short documentary tells the story of Kevin Carter, and the devastation of his career in South Africa as a result of black on black violence. Personally I enjoyed this film, although there are some gruesome clips that display starving children and people being shot and burnt alive in the streets of South Africa, I appreciate learning about how Kevin wanting to bring awareness to this violence form the world to see, but also how this impacted his personal life.

Kevin was blamed for not helping the starving children he photographed, the pressure became too much for him. After Kevin killed himself, his friend Reedwaan Ngwenya, a fellow photojournalist states that maybe it was for the best, the pain had disappeared for him and everything had ended.

The themes displayed in this documentary that I found are violence, suffering and blame. Kevin felt guilty for not helping the people he photographed, he felt like he could have done something, when in reality his job was to be a photographer, not a saviour. There is a major instance that impacted Kevin’s life when his friend Ken was shot dead during a shootout, while Kevin was being interviewed. As stated by Reedwann, ‘Kevin said he should’ve been there and stopped that bullet, he said it should’ve been him’.

The documentary was filled with Kevin’s relatives, friends and fellow photojournalists. His girlfriend Julia Carter recalled on a event that made her realise something wasn’t right with Kevin, something was wrong. Having this background insight into Kevin’s life provided by Julia, as well as his mother Roma, Reedwaan was good to make sense of what kind of person Kevin was, and how he interacted with the world around him.

And also information about what was happening in South Africa provided by photojournalist Paul Velasco and war correspondent Judith Matloff, was helpful to grasp how serious the violence is, and how gruesome some of the attacks were. Understanding this helps me to grasp the severity of the situation and makes me question is this level of violence still present in todays society, and is at as sever as it was 20-30 years ago? Witnessing people being shot and burned alive has impacted me greatly, as living in Queensland, Australia is nothing compared to the devastating impact violence has on the people in South Africa.

Sometimes it was hard to watch the gruesome attacks knowing that they are real videos taken by people in the Bang Bang Club (a photography club focused around South African violence). But I think it was worth including them into this Documentary to bring awareness to the situation. The importance of this documentary may have affected how the South African government fixes these issues, so it would interesting to research the effectiveness this short piece of the life in South Africa.

Reference:

Krauss, D., 2004. The Death of Kevin Carter.

Who am I?

Am I an emerging artist? Or am I just a person that likes movies?

I guess I’m someone that just wants to create. Someone that wants to create something beautiful. I don’t care if people don’t like it, I want to create something that I can put my heart and soul into, and make it visually amazing that makes me feel happy. I love emotive and moving music that speaks to me whilst I’m watching a story being told in a film. Meaningful and colourful performances within a film are key to create a beautiful and heart-felt film which can create a craving from more.

Within my documentary I want to showcase the life of a photographer in the early to mid 20th century. I want to show how photography came to light and how this industry grew. My great-grandfather was apart of the early photography commute so I want to express that. The title of this may be ‘The photographic genius of the 20th century’ or ‘The life of Mr. Murcott: A Photographic beginning’.

I will have to ensure to research on this topic thoroughly and extensively so I grasp how life was like back then, to ensure my documentary is full of reliable and truthful information, and also so that the events told are true. The evolution of camera equipment should be discussed to and how men and women experiment this new technology.

A black and white theme will come across well to determine the past, and as the story progresses through the years, colour will emerge.

This subject is important to me as it is apart of my families past, I want to tell people how everything started, and what we have now if beyond imaginable back in the early 1900’s. My target audience will be young adults from 20 to 30 year olds. This documentary will inform young adults with a passion of photography and film about how this industry all started, and will greatly allow them to appreciate how it has over time turned into a worldwide community. I hope to understand the past better acknowledge the great achievements artists in the past have accomplished, which has helped the newer generations understand different art forms and ideas.

The Story of Bubble Boy: This short film’s theme plays heavily on paranoia and how it affects somebodies life. Bubble Boy revolves his life around being afraid of sharp objects, or things that can hurt him. He wraps everything sharp with bubble wrap, and himself to protect his ‘precious life’. This may symbolise that this boy will protect himself from everything he intensifies as dangerous, he is too afraid to try new things and too afraid to take the risk of being hurt. Maybe he has had to past expertises that have caused him to be wary of his surroundings, but because of this it affects his everyday life and how he functions as a human His paranoia is controlling his life more than he is controlling it himself.

As the short film progresses, the theme evolves from paranoia to loneliness, and we see how being afraid has made him avoid having a social life. He wants to have friends and go to clubs and pubs, but his paranoia holds him back. He decides that he needs go outside into the public for food, and as he does that he realises that life outside his house is not so bad. HE opens up and isn’t afraid to make the jump anymore.

Characteristics of their internal and external lives:

Poppy:
Whether I’m skating or just walking on the street or something I feel like shit, and legit so depressed and angry all the time, and I get so paranoid by everyone that walks towards me, sometimes I pee a little. I don’t know... I’m just so stressed about this shit man... but when I hit a bong and chow down on mushrooms all of that shit emotion stuff just goes away and I feel peaceful and laugh all the time, that’s what I love y’know. It makes it easier to go shopping and talk to people, even though I don’t know what I’m saying half the time. My short ass 5’3 body is hot, I love to wear just a long sleeved top and these light blue loose jeans that are cut off just bellow the my knee’s, and my orange and green nike high tops just complete that fit. I love to have my black hair in two little braids that slightly dyed green, it makes my freckles, eyeliner and nose rings look cute as fuck.

Jake:
I don’t know man I’m pretty chill about everything, I don’t care what happens, I mean it gets more in trouble but I just wanna have fun and hit some bongs. Poppy’s cool and all but she gets on my nerves, sometimes I can’t handle it y’know. I usually just shave all my hair I don’t need that shit on my head, my silver chain, white shirt and black shorts make it all happen aye, sometimes cops look at me like some thug but I’m just trynna live man.

Lucy:
I love my family they make me so happy, I want to spend all the time with them. Partying with friends is what I consider a hobbie, they all just make me just as happy as my family does. Sometimes I feel like horrible about Poppy though, I feel like we’ve let her down, and we could have done something to prevent it, hopefully we can help her when she let’s us... My absolutely beautiful wavy blonde hair and perfect teeth make me look so pretty... but I mean of course I still hate my body and ears sometimes... but that doesn’t matter I’m still happy! Floral dresses are my thing, I must always be perfect.

Major highlights and lowlights in their past (and visual elements):

Poppy:
I don’t know I don’t really talk about it much, I don’t need to really haha... I mean Jake and some random people hit me a few times but it really doesn’t matter because he’s my friend now so yeah. But besides that when I when I was 16 I went this party and oh my god it was amazing because after my sister and I went to the beach at night and looked up into the stars while we ate the best fucking pizza ever.... I love my sister.

Jake:
Bro my dad abused me when I was a kid, what can I tell you. My adhd ass made my dad hit me so it’s my fault anyway. Good thing I ran away from home when I was 10 I guess. But fuck that guy, good thing he’s dead haha. But life became so much better for me when I discovered weed, it just makes everything so much better. Poppy is weird though, she’s into that weird stuff like mdma and all that, gross.

Lucy: One time when I was little, mum, dad, Poppy and Jacob went on this road trip and we all had a picnic together, it was amazing and especially beautiful when we saw the sunset. But something even better was when I was 18 and went to the beach after a party with Poppy, that moment will always be in my heart. I have all these amazing moments in my life, that just get ruined when I went to school, seriously everyday somebody says something about how I look, it’s disgusting.... and hurtful.... I wish I never had to deal with that.

Notes to visually implement these:

There’s a show on Netflix called ‘love death and robots’ which has an episode on season one called ‘The Witness’, created by Alberto Mielgo. At the beginning of this short, there are these glitches/violent and doleful visions that the female main character has. I really like and that is done, so in my short film when the Poppy enters a psychedelic state I could have her flashback on them time Jake and his friends abused Poppy, and also exaggerate a devil like appearance in the present time when she is doing the psychedelic drugs with him. This glitchy and violent scene will show the audience how traumatic and also fractured this memory is for her. Implementing this visually with other past experiences, in varying intensities with the other main characters will showcase how intense those memories are for them. It will also add a certain style towards the short film. I will link Alberto Mielgo’s ‘The Witness’, at the bottom of this and a YouTube link to the specific scene.

Contrasting expected and unexpected behaviours:

Poppy: Her appearance looks like she’s rough, and lazy and well... a drug addict. But she’s actually really sweet, kind and shy.... with a little bit of a temper sometimes

Jake: He is this laid back guy, that smokes weed, says he doesn’t care about anything and does nothing all day but just go to sleep at the skatepark while his friends skate. But on the other hand, he supports his mother financially and helps her with her medicine.

Lucy: She seems like this positive happy person, but she actually gets annoyed and pissed off by everything, sometimes she’ll seem like everything is okay, but then bursts into this outrage, most of the time in public to random strangers.

Argument between Poppy and Jake:

Poppy: You talkin’ to me?

Jake: Just go away Poppy

Poppy: Shut up Jake, all you do is laze around and do shit all, you’re a piece of shit and you already fucking know it.

Jake: Poppy... you’re the piece of shit, all you do is complain and sook about the smallest things like seriously fuck off! I have done more with my life than you know.

Poppy: Like what? Run away from home?

Jake: How fucking dare you... Get out! Don’t fucking talk to me about my past, think about yourself and only yourself, no one fucking cares about you so fuck off?

Poppy: You are so right! Especially you, you don’t care about me. You beat the shit outta me 2 years ago!

Jake: I didn’t’ do shit you schizophrenic bitch.

Poppy: Oh my god... don’t play dumb with me. You know what you fucking did Jake!

Reference:
http://www.albertomielgo.com/the-witness

https://youtu.be/hsTql9JKIVs

Extending on my theme described in one sentence, I will have the 22 year old woman, Poppy Hopkins, as a main character in my short film for assignment 3. The main story will be focussed around her life and how addiction has influenced her actions and decisions.

Another main character will be Poppy’s friend, Jake Maree. He will recognised as the person who began Poppy’s addiction with drugs, and a bad influence on her.

Lastly, Poppy’s sister will be a main character in this story, Lucy Hopkins. She will be Poppy’s saviour and give her the love she needs to help her out of the addiction.

My idea for this story will start out with Jake and Poppy who are best friends having a good time, laughing and doing drugs. I think a psychedelic scene with Jake and Poppy at the beginning of the short film will greatly showcase how deeply influenced she is by drugs and will allow the audience to see this is her life and she is happy. During the psychedelic scene I want to include little glitches/broken flashbacks from the past of her being abused by Jake and other unknown people to reveal the rough and dangerous environment she’s in.

After this scene is over I want her to wake up to a text from her father, saying that they are having a family dinner and that she is invited. A week later she goes back to her old family home which is this modern and clean ‘normal’ family in a friendly neighbourhood. This will contradict her life style, and as they sit at the dinner table, her appearance will stick out of the rest of her family, to signify her lifestyle.

As the story progresses through arguments, more drug abuse and crying, her sister will eventually bring her out of that life and support her in living a sober and healthy life... maybe.

At the end of the short film, after the audience thinks it’s a ‘happy’ ending, Poppy will be in a bathroom sticking herself with a needle, although she hesitates, it is contradicting the point of the whole story, leading into a cliffhanger and possible part 2.

Without dialogue: Writing a letter in a time capsule buried for 100 years

Dear whoever gained the honour of reading this letter. My name is Cooper Eberle, I am 34 years old and I’m living in Tasmania, Austrian in the year 2026.

In this time capsule I have include pictures of Austrian nature and wildlife, as I’m sure in 100 years or so climate change has ruined everything and fixing the issue didn’t work, so I hope to remind you of the great plants and animals of not only Australia but the whole world.

I have also included children’s toys and video games, so that you can see how these times have evolved. Especially how humans play video games, as I’m sure they have become more realistic and enjoyable, of course. I have also included an iPhone 18, a Samsung MXX11 and a gaming console, so you can see how technology has evolved for the everyday person.

Life as I know still includes vehicles that use petrol, deforestation still continues and animals are still going to extinct everyday, there are no more bengal tigers left on this planet. Nuclear attacks began in Ukraine, and America, Australia and England are taking over the world. Russia and China launch nuclear attacks on the daily.

Gender roles in our society are continuously growing, and our money system is mostly digital now, even some places have abolished physical money.

I hope the future is bright, unless you’re all living on mars now... I wouldn’t be surprised.

Bare dialogue:

Random 1: Hey
.
Random 2: Yo
.
Random 1: I was just wondering... what do you do when you’ve been cheated on so many times and can’t trust anybody anymore... like ever
.
Random 2: Bro, I don’t even know I’ve barely been iin 1 relationship
.
Random 1: Ughhh... I’m so tired of living in this shitty world, nobody cares about anyone and we’re all on our own... I can’t give me trust to people when they just don’t care.
.
Random 2: I appreciate the rant bro, but I don’t want to hear it... There are people out there, like me, I care for you. I love you man.
.
Random 1: Thank you, I needed that...
.
Random 2: How ‘bout we go get some food, and let’s just fucking chill ahaha
.
Random 1: Sweet, I think that’s a good idea
.
Random 2: Alright hop on lets go, I know the perfect place.
.
Random 1: Hell yeah.
.
Random 2: Righto lets get outta here.

                 *5 minutes later*
.
Random 1: Fucking turn!
.
Random 2: I am what the fuck! Where did the fucking truck come from!
.
Random 1: Holy shit holy shit we’re going to die!
.
Random 2: Oh shit no! ARhhhhgghghhghghnbkgfbji...

A human civilian talking about Thanos (from the Marvel universe)

Civilian 1: Maybe he was right, maybe the avengers shouldn’t have stopped him. I mean his idea of removing half of the population of the universe is kind of a good idea.
.
Civilian 2: What are you talking about?!
.
Civilian 1: I mean its a really good idea, because then the other half can thrive and there’s more food and water to go around and we can become greater and more peaceful and all that.
.
Civilian 2: No... just no...
.
Civilian 1: Honestly the avengers were wrong and the ‘bad guy’ was actually right this time, Thanos is wise for that one.

Having this perspective on Thanos can get the audience thinking. Maybe removing half the population in the universe was actually a good idea? Even though billions died...
