Graphic Design: The Palettes and Type Formatting 😊

1. NUR FAKHIRA SHARINA BINTI MD SHAFIE (A174902) 29 July 2022

2. How time flies as its already reach the end of 2nd week elective posting. In this week, I learned more about the necessity of structures, palettes, type anatomy and type formatting. These two components play an important role in making attractive design later. By the end of this week, I am able to understand about the type, colors, images and graphic elements needed in design. On top of that, I also able to apply the knowledge about the grid, understand the negative space as well as using appropriate margins in creating graphic designs. This also indicate that I already covered two out of my three learning points. But of course need more practice to apply all the learning points that had been learn so far. Slowly but surely 😊!

3. The points that I need to remember from week 2 including the necessity of structures which can be divided into grid and optical illusions. Both of these components can be combine together in term of making decision about the arrangement of elements that I learnt from last week. A good design should always start with a grid ! This is where the “Rules of Third” should be apply. The element must be place at the targeted point. Not to forget, do consider about the negative space, margin and gutters in order to make the design looks neat and tidy !

Palettes are all about colors ! It is important to ensure that we can deliver our composition clearly to the audience. Each color had its own meaning. Minimizing usage of neon palettes in our design should be a great idea and make sure the contents can be readable !

In terms of type formatting, I had a chance to learn on type styles and families such as Oldstyle, Moden, Slab Serif, Sans Serif, Script and Decorative. There were slight differences between them which indicate their suitability in delivering message. In any one design project, limitation to only two typefaces must be done and make certain those two typefaces content obviously with one another.

4. The more I learned, the more I gain information to create a better design. I was excited yet nervous throughout this week. It was very exciting for me to apply all the learning points in one design but it make me nervous and worried as well.

5. One good thing from what I did that I can practice now is making a plan before straight to design. Planning about the entire message that need to be deliver and make an action based on it. If there’s no plan make beforehand, it would not work out.

6. The concerns that I face for this week were making decision in choosing appropriate suitable colors and type formatting. Sometimes, it’s all look same for me especially the type formatting. Choosing the wrong type formatting will make the design look either too informal or too formal depends on its main messages. However, its such an honor for me to learn from Sir David which make a clear description on how to choose a correct or suitable type formatting based on our own messages.

7. My plan for next week is to learn on how to make my design looks visualize my creating design ‘trick’. Trying to make my design to be a silent ambassador soon ! 😊

Second Week of Procreate Digital Art

1. Chua Qi Shen (A176206) 31/7/2022

2. Currently, I begin to suit myself with this software. Drawing and coloring becoming more easy than ever. Back then, one artwork took me 1 day to finish it but for now 3 to 4 hours will be sufficient for me to finish one artwork. I really enjoy the process of making digital art and grew a passion for it!

3. In week 2, I have mastered some advanced technique such as the selection tool and transformation tool of Procreate software. With this tools, I am able to adjust a lot of the features of my painting, flipping them, making them symmetry, crop and adjust them to fit the canvas. Duplicating them and enhance the outline of painting to make it more lively. Other than that, I also discovered Hue, Saturation, Brightness and Curves features, which basically add a final touch to my paintings. I am able to edit the whole colors of the painting at once until I get satisfied. Apart from that, I have mastered the technique to draw scenery painting in this week not only from Udemy but also from youtubers when I did my extra learning on my own.

4. Extremely grateful to learn digital art! It really is satisfying whenever I done one artwork. Definitely the best hobby I ever had, and I will continue drawing digital arts as one of my stress relieving activities.

5. From digital art, what I learned is patience. Making a perfect artwork is not easy and it requires focus, skills and numerous amount of adjustments. It is similar to the practice of medicine, nothing comes simple. We need to be careful, focus and be patient when dealing with all kind of cases so that we can minimize mistakes as much as possible. I appreciate digital art for giving me opportunity to train my patience.

6. So far for now, the challenge for me is making animations and also draw realistic human face. Those are the one that I find it very hard to do. However, I believe practice more is the key to perfect my artwork, I will find other sources of info and guidance for example from Youtube to enhance my knowledge and solve this challenge.

7. For week 3, I am going to try realistic human drawings, as well as create some animations.

I learned on combination of the functions and code to solve more complex problem and task given by the instructor. At first, it was hard and confusing because require lengthy coding. However towards the end, I managed to simplify lengthy code using more simple function or code. At the end of the week 2, I managed to create Tic-Tac-Toe game using python.

3. Some of the complex coding can be simplify by using other functions. First I need to understand the task or problem then start to plan the code step by step.

4. At first it was very confusing to solve the task. However, it was very satisfying when I manage to complete the task 🥹. Don't give up on the first try. 🦾

5. Patience and proper planning are very important in order to complete complex task or problem.

6. Difficulty that I faced during the learning was during completing the task given. At first, I can't imagine how to plan and write a proper code. However, the instructor advice to brake the task by section and solve step step really helps me a lot. It also make the plan for solution better and easier to understand.

7.My plan for week 3 are to start on advanced python module and web scraping.

Second Week of 'Anneonghaseyo'

1) Chan Tze Xin (A174638) 31th July 2022.

2) I can't believe I've been learning Korean grammars for the second week already! Since this entire course requires 6 weeks of learning, I've arranged the schedule hoping that I am able to complete 2 weeks of lessons in this week, which I did it! I am so happy that I am able to follow the time table and divide my time wisely in order to complete everything that I've arranged for the week. Throughout this week, I realized that there are a lot Korean grammars that we have to learn in order to ace Korean Language. I've only realized that how far I am from being able to communicate in Korean Language fluently, however, I will not give up but keep trying and practicing so that I am able to achieve what I want to in the future! Something different from last week's lesson is that I've watched videos on YouTube and search on Google whenever there's something I don't understand via the learning materials provided by Coursera which they really helped a lot!

3) From this week's Korean learning, I've realized that there's a pattern in the grammas in which they will always add a '으' after the word which consists of a consonant below them. I just have to understand the concept of it in order to make life easier so that I don't have to memorize everything merely.

4) I am feeling more thrilled and excited for this entire Korean Learning Course! Everytime when I finished 1 lesson, I would feel so happy that I am able to learn something new by the end of the day but at the same time, I would feel down that I am another step away from completing this course. I think after this 1-month Elective Posting, I would continue to enroll another course on Coursera in learning Korean Grammar! I find learning Korean Language really fun especially when you're doing something you're interested in!

5) I've been constantly jotting down notes in my own understanding of each particular Korean grammar eventhough learning materials are given. I am an old-school person which I often write down something on papers in order in improve my memory in which I'm applying the same thing on this Korean Learning process! I definitely recommend this to my peers as it helps a lot in memorizing and I am able to just flip through the papers whenever I forgot about the grammar which it's very convenient too!

6) At first, I am afraid on how am I able to finish all 6 weeks of Korean Learning in 4 weeks but realising how I am able to finish 2 weeks of lessons in 1 week, this will not be a concern for me from now on. I think I did a great job by arranging my schedules wisely so that I am able to complete everything that I wish to in the period of time divided.

7) For Week 3, I might be getting a little busy as I will be working outside and might be tired when I reach home, however I wish that I am able to continue following the schedule that I've set for Week 3. I hope that I am able to try practicing the grammar that I've learnt before with my friends that are taking the same lessons! It'll definitely be fun by just thinking about it, can't wait for it!

Digital Art - Week 2

1. Manjusree A/P Varadharajan, A177119 (31 July 2022)

2. This week’s progress has been great! With all that I have learned this week, I painted mommy and baby elephants from scratch. I learned how to alter the existing brushes by importing textures and adjusting the settings as the pre-existing brushes have only limited features. Besides, I learned how to make full use of the colours, though I need spend more time practicing and playing around with the colours. Choosing colours that closely resemble an image can be challenging, thus I learned how to create a colour pallet based on an image or a file. I could also customise the colour pallet according to my liking. There are four modes in the colour panel, which includes the disc, harmony, classic and value. I usually use harmony and value. It is easier to adjust the hue, saturation and brightness in the value colour panel and its easier to find complementary colours in the harmony panel. Apart from that, I learned about blending modes. Blending modes are analogous to different translucent films that I can put on my painting to achieve a good shading on my painting. There are five different blending modes which are, dark, light, difference, divide and luminosity. For this week’s painting, I used a dark burn to make my shadows pop out more. The last point that I learned this week is the masking technique. Masking helps me to modify and adjust my artwork without disrupting the content of my artwork. There are three types of masking techniques which includes the alpha lock, clipping mask and layer mask. Alpha lock and clipping mask is the same feature except the additional freedom that clipping mask has. I can paint above or below my artwork without disrupting my main painting and that is what masking is all about. However, I did not use any masking techniques in this painting.

3. Blending modes and masking techniques are two important learning points for this week. As beautiful as it could modify my painting, one has to be very careful while using it. It is important to choose the appropriate blending mode as it could alter the whole artwork. Same goes with the masking techniques, but I did not get a suitable layer to add the masking techniques.

4. I am honestly enjoying this elective posting! It stimulates my creativity so much and I guess I have a new hobby discovered.

5. One good thing that I learned and can now practice with the artworks I did is to declutter my mind. I am amazed by how I am not bothered by any worries I have while doing these artworks. It’s a quality I have always wanted to unlock, and I’m more than happy now that I can now slowly learn to calm myself down in days when I do not feel myself by creating artworks on Procreate.

6. As of now, I do not have any difficulties using Procreate. However, I am really curious about the masking techniques, thus I’d like to use those techniques in my next artwork.

7. In the upcoming week, I’d like to make another artwork based on few new things such as the masking techniques, selection modes and transform tools.

1. Arisya Umaira Binti Azaiddin, A171601, 31st July 2022

2. For this week, I learned about the fundamentals of typography. I have always been fascinated by typography ever since I was in primary school, always doodling quotes at the corner of books. For me, typography is the essence of graphic design - to convey your message as well as implementing design. Wether we realise it or not, good typography influences how we read and what we stress upon in our reading material. I learned about the difference between font and typespace, leading and kerning, as well as what to use depending on our purpose. For example, did you know that justified texts fit more words in one line rather than unjustified texts? That’s why most research articles and books use justified text - its the more economical option!

3. One interesting thing I learned was that some letters in our alphabet are inspired by the human body. When I found out, I vaguely remember a question someone asked a long time ago, “does life imitate art, or does art imitate life?” The fact that alphabets are inspired by the human body shows that art does sometimes imitate life. I think that is the beauty of art, inspiration is everywhere and something we see as mundane might be exciting for someone else.

4. I got hit with Covid this week, so I was a bit bummed at feeling under the weather. However I was happy that I still managed to get 9/10 out of a quiz that we were required to answer this week!

5. Since I was hit with covid this week, I was unable to push myself to explore the materials as much as I did last week. However, I realise that its important to also prioritise rest and it proved fruitful after getting my quiz results. Moving onwards, I must learn to prioritise rest when my body is not up for it and double my efforts when I feel better.

6. Other than Covid which had me bedridden for almost 4 days, I did not experience any problems with the materials or course. I must say this week has been more enjoyable than last week because I learned about one of my most favourite topics.

7. Next week, I will be learning about the fundamentals of shape and colour.

Second Week with Procreate

1) Wan Muhammad Ariff ( A177120 ) 31/7/2022

2) I am starting to adapt myself of painting and drawing on a screen rather than on a paper. It was a challenge on the first week, but after awhile, with practise, I was able to get somewhere and paint well. It took me a long time to finish a painting during the first part of Elective Posting, but now I would be able to finish a painting with a short amount of time.

3) For week 2, I was able to learn the important functionality of the procreate app, such as the adjustment tool. This tool consist of 4 different functions, Colour, Blur, Filter, Liquify and Clone. All these tool helps in creating depth to the artwork and provide a certain volume that is unable to be achieved under normal settings. Other than that, we apply basic of those tools initially, before proceeding to the advanced settings of each tool. Of course there are other gestures being taught to us on how to use the procreate software to make my life easier, and making changes would speed up the process. However, I am quite used to the default settings that procreate made, therefore I will stick to it. But in the future, if there are some changes that I would like to alter for my advantage, I will do it. Splitting screen in procreate is also a function that I never knew! I was quite shocked by how advanced the program is. With the split screen mode, I am able paint the small details, while watching the overall changes of the artwork. i find it extremely useful, however I have not put into action yet. Hopefully, I'll be able to use it soon!

4) I am quite amazed how far I am able to come from the first time I used it. Right now I feel mature compared to before. Excitement will always be there, no matter how far I learn the software. It was truly a pleasent experience for me. Painting to what I like, sharing paintings with my other friends who also paints. I am currently feeling happy, however not satisfied until I finished the course of this procreate software!

5) One good thing I was able to learnt is imagination. With a strong imagination, we all will be surprised by how far one artwork can represent itself. Imagination also allow us to think while painting, adapting in the middle of making artwork, and tiny details that can be added to create depth ot the artwork. It is truly quite a lesson for me to be able to appreciate how much imagination provides us in creating artwork.

6) Right now, the challanges that I'm currently facing is drawing a realistic human face, which is quite tough for me, since I am more of a scenery painter. I love painting the oceans, jungles, city. Any sort of landscaping I will try my best to paint it and able to make it through. However drawing a realistic face is truly a challenge and I do not even know where to begin. Hopefully, I am able to improve on that particular aspect and make something that is satisfying for me.

7) In week 3, I plan to learn the ways to make a 3D art and painting, as well as, adding motion to the painting. This is one of the course that I have been dying to learn, and i am finally here. I would also like to finish studying the advanced brushes used for painting.

1. Jazebelle Faith Childs, A178492, 31st July 2022.

2. My progress is going well. I have followed all the necessary instructions of the videos provided and they are quite helpful. Other than the videos, the written lessons were also very helpful as they teach more than the videos can provide. I have passed all my quizzes and assignments, which all have 80% passing marks so I can quite satisfied that I have absorbed the knowledge provided as needed.

3. A point that I should remember from week 2 is that I should not rush. Rushing the process will only make me more confused as this is something entirely new to me. Sometimes, we are so excited to learn something new that we just rush the process to see the end result quickly, but a point to remember is the journey to get to the end result is very important.

4. I feel like this week is definitely more challenging as it is supposed to be, since the course will only get more challenging as the weeks pass. But I feel like I managed to pull through and learned a lot of new things from the course.

5. One of the good things I’ve learned this week is how to incorporate audio into the options selected (a video is provided for reference) and how to use the MIT App Inventor to solve a mathematic problem. I also learned how to create an alarm clock application this week so I am quite excited about the things I will learn next week.

6. I did not have much difficulties this week except that the course is getting more challenging. For example, for just a simple incorporation of audio into the application, I have to add a lot of “code blocks” that were taught in the written lessons. Sometimes, it gets confusing as they will skip the steps that they assume you to know but I can also go to the previous written lessons and revise the information.

7. My plan for week 3 is to continue passing the quizzes and assignments, and to create more applications that are different in style and function.

1. Hiew Kai Ven (A176984) 31/7/2022

2. As of now I have learnt practically all search engine and search bot has to offer from relevance and to the coding behind web designing as to increase the chances that a business will appear top on the search section. I have also dived into even the possibilities such as social media that can further increase the presence of the business around the globe as well as locally. There are also paid ads that we can optimize so that every penny spent on advertisement will be fully utilised in converting a fellow consumer into a full-fledge customer. When it comes to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) I've learnt even more ideas that can be applied as to make our website more discoverable and I have also learnt the power of responsive design for a website. This is because mobile users have increased exponentially over the years since smartphone was popularized.

3. This week I have learnt how to fully utilised the search engine when it comes to digital marketing such as relevance, coding behind web design, layout of the website and search engine optimization. Besides that, we can also utilise the power of paid ads and optimise it even further to find its potential for digital marketing instead of just letting it appear on an organic search. As for social media, we can use it alongside our web as well as use it to engage with interested customer with contents that we post. Social media ranges from Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc.

4. So far I feel like I am more engaged at the topic being taught by Google Garage and that if I were to be plopped onto a business right now, I have already been equipped with proper skills to engage with my customers as well as getting new ones. Definitely a neat skill for the future

5. Proper discipline when it comes to self-learning since we as humans tend to procrastinate a lot if there are no setbacks when completing a task

6. As of now my concern is the amount of details that I have to remember for digital marketing. But as for the main details of the classes, I have got them pinned down into my brain

7. Continue my classes, quizzes and passing the module

Second Week of Procreate: Solid Foundations

1.	Maryam Wafiyah Bt Mohd Adam, A174970, 31/7/2022

2.	This week I started my udemy course in Procreate: Solid Foundations. It has been a slow progress. This is because there’s also a lot of theory inserted before the practical by Simon Foster. Things like “When is a pencil not a pencil?” and “Introduction of colours” really requires focus and deep understanding before proceeding with the practical drawings.

3.	I’ve learned so much this week, from simple, like inking and blocking in, to complicated things, like the colour panel, applying colour theory and finding the right shade. It really amazes me to know that shadows aren’t always black and lights aren’t always white. Everything greatly depends on the surrounding colours and how it reflects on the main focus of our drawing.
For applying colour theory, Simon teaches how to create an artwork from a reference piece. To find the source of the lighting and the angles it hits our subject, and the colour of the light, like whether it’s blue light or green light. Everything is very interesting and complex. It took me many hours to create this piece, and I believe that it could look even better

4.	Honestly, this week was a bit overwhelmed for me because it was hard to finish even 1 piece, when I got to finish 4 artworks last week. At the same time, I feel very elated with the outcome that I work hard on.

5.	Colour theory goes a very long way. I didn’t know about it before which makes it hard to create realistic drawings. Now that I know, it still is taking lots of my time, and hopefully I can do it more efficiently in the future.

6.	I find it hard to keep my motivation alive, because it’s a very slow process, unlike the 20 seconds timelapse T_T. I cope by giving time off for me to relax and take a breather. Everytime I feel like I couldn’t finish it, I stop, do some other activities, then will I continue.

7.	For next week, I will continue with the course which will deeply focus about brushes like the shape, grain, taper and render settings.
