I agree that children/students need to learn how to be problem solvers. The need to communicate, listen and work with others is a life skill! This is something that needs to start at home and be transferred then expanded on in school.
Students need to look at problems with a bird's eye view to see all the solutions, not just one. If we can help students to learn how to think and not what to think, we have all done our job as parents and teachers,

As a Special Ed ELA teacher I recognize the process of reading and writing as learning to think. We think as we practice these skills in order to process author’s messages/craft while making meaning, and writing in response or writing original works within given genres or structures. In following the district ELA modules, many of the 11 core categories of skills are being developed, yet several, as not specifically connected to state standards, are not part of direct instruction – of important note, I don’t think we address flexibility and adaptability and could/should commit more time to allow student reflection and self-directed learning – as Special Ed, I wonder what that looks like.

I love the concept of the 21st Century Skills and how they impact an individual to be prepared outside of the classroom. I appreciate the thought that if teachers are giving feedback to students based on these skills, it decreases academic pressures. 21st Century skills do not only look at an area of content to be tested, but to interpret newly learned material through collaboration, leadership and creativity. etc.and how this information can impact them in the daily lives. Reflection for both students and teachers is key to maintain fluid learning.

I thought that it was overwhelming to have so many skills that this teacher was working on. I think that there could possibly be some main ones that he chose. I think that the need to communicate and collaborate are main skills that he was focusing on in the classroom. These are important life skills for everyone.

I agree that we need to be preparing students to be better problem solvers and thinking more on their own. The teacher in this touched upon many skills, focusing on a few may be more effective. As teachers, we tend to be stretched thin trying to get it all in.

Working WITH peers, respectfully communicating (especially listening) are LIFE skills our students need to work on. This needs to be modeled at both home and school.

Engaging today's students' requires creative thinking and problem solving. Asking questions to promote critical thinking are essential in classrooms today.

The combination of these 21st century skills and past learned skills not only makes students a more complete person, but makes us more complete teachers. The article tells me that we are all lifetime learners, and there should never be an end to learning.

These 21st Century skills are so important for our students. I think the idea that we need to teach our children to think for themselves, not just remember information is critical. I had an experience just last week that reflected this point. I was leading a group that required the students to come to the table. There was one chair missing needed to accommodate the group. The student left without a chair stood there and looked at my co-teacher and I. She truly had no idea what to do. She could not think for herself how to “fix” the problem. I modeled getting a chair from the desk near by, pulled it over to the table and sat down. She continued to look to my co-teacher for the answer. This really brought to my attention that we need to help student think how they would solve the problem before telling them what to do. It is so important for parents to model and practice at home and teachers to reinforced at school.

As one of the older students in the class I find this topic very pertinent. Classes I take now are very "student -centered" - but are my own classes? I am trying, but it is a long road and somewhat overwhelming.
I grew up with a teacher led classroom model, so to some extent, that is how I expected to teach; on the other hand, I would like to encourage critical thinking in my students and I have found that critical thinking is woefully absent in my students, at least as it pertains to academics! With that observation, the question arises, how to foster critical thinking? That is conceptually where this article is going, and where the model of student-centered teaching leads. At this point, however, I would like to see less of a list of critical skills and more of a road map of how to establish a student-centered culture in my classroom... I suppose with that I am asking to be led there by a master teacher rather than to critically think my own way to that goal!! That may be kind of contradictory...
