         <description><![CDATA[<div>You cannot diagnose ALS but doctors should be aware if the patient has weak muscular movement or not any motor neuron signs. The average life span of a person who has been diagnosed with ALS is approximately 2 years. However, people such as Steven Hawking have been able to outlive this due date for over 50 years.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>ALS was discovered in 1869 by french neurologist Jean Martin Charcot, but wasn't until 1939 when ALS became internationally known. Charcot found that ALS can eventually become worse and leave your body paralyzed, affecting voluntary muscles in the body. Later on, more researchers and neurologists started to find why ALS affects muscles and nerve cells.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>ALS's causes are unknown, as research has not demonstrated environmental factors or aging can cause ALS. ALS is 90% sporadic, the cause or causes are unknown, and 5-10% by genetic mutations. ALS is a nondisjunction disease. While it is considered both dominant and recessive for having different forms of ALS, the disease's common form is recessive.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>There are currently no treatments that can eliminate ALS, however, U.S. officials approved a drug, riluzole (Rilutek), which slows down ALS. Riluzole reduces damage to your nerve cells by lowering the amount of glutamine in your system. Riluzole has been shown to extend the life of people with ALS by many months, but cannot fix damage already done and it is not a cure.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 2016, Dr. Jonathan D. Glass believed that stem cells could aid in survival of patients with ALS. Glass injected stem cells into the spinal cords of 12 patients, only 1 patient showing improvement. He concluded that the procedure provided no benefit to patients, however, Glass stated that "we are just getting started with testing our hypotheses about using stem cells as therapeutics."</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Symptoms of ALS include: muscle weakness, stiff muscles, loss of muscle, muscle spasms, overactive reflexes, problems with coordination. Fatigueis a major sign of ALS. It normally affects the nervous system as the disease affects the nerve cells and spinal cord. It also affects the muscular system. Since most nerve cells are killed, some muscles can stop functioning and leave the person paralyzed.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Lou Gehrig's Disease became very popular and well known thanks to Pete Frates. He was the person to create the very popular ice bucket challenge which everyone was doing back in 2014. Pete was diagnosed with ALS in 2012 and him and his buddy decided to make a challenge to dump ice cold water on your head to support the ALS Association. It came out to be very successful. Many celebrities and people donated to the ALS association and did the challenge. Over 17 million people did it.</div>]]></description>
