Embraces AI on a CELTA and has had good results, by supporting trainees in its use:

· Orientation – what do you know, how do you feel about AI bots eg ChatGPT

· Considers advantages of using it in lesson planning and writing materials

1. Responds to learner needs more closely than coursebook, can produce output specific to context

2. Enhances criticality of resources, ie to see where AI output needs refining

3. Makes time for further creativity re presentation of materials

· Supports trainees in writing series of prompts, (activity type, level, target language, provide an example, specify number eg 10 sentences) and in adding prompts to refine ChatGPT’s first go at a response

· Important that trainees acknowledge in portfolio when they’ve used it, and it could be that tutor in assessing lesson planning/adaptation of coursebook, the assessment includes the prompts they’ve used and the refinement of the output (it becomes a case of not ‘wow, look what the technology did’ but ‘wow, look what I did with what the technology produced’)

· Could be used for 1 or 2 TPs later in the course, and optional – 75% of John’s trainees tried it

· Found it’s good at controlled and freer practice tasks

· TP ss were engaged in the lessons that resulted

Jacqueline's trial - I tried it with small cohort:

One trainee who Chat GPT has helped with Thai grammar got it, saying that he sees if he’s thinking about some difficulty I might have with teaching – ChatGPT can help me:

-find examples for certain concepts

-lesson plans

-student qu’s/when they have difficulty in understanding

Paid for version:

-stores

-remembers what you’ve put in previously so there’s more tailored output

-no limits ‘you’ve asked too many’

I found the session delivery wasn’t scary in the end - all v straightforward, and I learnt from trainee!
