Furthermore, I am most excited to promote a magazine which I created last year that was birthed from my passion for young people. I believe that this project will help me comprehend the work that is required to make effective promotional content and henceforth, will assist me in my future roles.

Identifying and Reaching My Target Audience

• Age range: Females ranging between 17-19 years of age.

• Personal interests: My target audience ideally enjoys reading and is highly introspective. The females reading Moo Moo should have an eagerness to learn and grow before stepping out into the real world.

• Geographic location: Moo Moo is a South Australian based magazine for teens, therefore, to ensure that the content is of relevance to each student the content will dissect tips and implications when completing SACE.

• Level of education: To maximise the relevance of the content, the readership should be completing either Year 12 or Year 13.

• Which platforms (including social media platforms) are members of my (potential) audience using? The current students completing Year 12 are grouped into a population of 18-34 year olds who are known as "digital natives" (Mitchell S, 2022); "91%" of digital natives use Facebook, "83%" use YouTube and "81%" use Instagram. However, a general consensus would claim that high school culture promotes the use of of Instagram, Snapchat and Tik Tok.

• How often do members of my (potential) audience use the platforms, e.g., daily? Every few days? Weekly? These platforms are engaged with on a daily basis. According to Roy Morgan, an independent Australian social and political market research company, "girls aged 14-24 spend 822 minutes on social media each week"; that's approximately 2 hours a day (The University of Queensland, 2021).

• What kinds of content do they enjoy consuming, e.g., videos, essays, memes, GIFs? Content that digital natives engage with on a daily basis consists of Instagram and Facebook reels, stories, youtube videos etc.

• How can your content enrich the life of your (potential) audience members? Moo Moo allows a generation of young women to feel heard and validated in their confusion throughout their final year of high school. By efficiently using this platform I am able to create a community for Year 12 students to feel supported and prepared to step into their new season of adulthood; this will be symbolised throughout my video.

• How does your content differ from similar content available online? What is the point of difference? The content within Moo Moo is audience specific and therefore bridges the gap between the author (me) and the readership (year 12 students).

Although this does not specifically appeal to my audience, it emphasised the importance of storytelling in promotional videos; especially within an educational context. Raoul Carmody, technical producer, has created a clean composition within each frame which is developed by a direct storyline; to employ this in my own video, I will endeavour to set out a storyboard before filming.

2. I am attracted to the stylistic features within this video which follow personal testimonies of vulnerable individuals in a creative manner. The campaign features the positive effect that implementing mental health tools has on ones wellbeing; something which I wish to convey through my message to Year 12 students. From this campaign, I would like to replicate the testimonial aspect by following the storyline of a little girl being transported into Year 12 through Moo Moo; signifying the importance of these tools in young peoples lives.

3. This video in specific conveys a pathos-driven message, causing the audience to develop empathy for victims of abuse. The content combines both analogue and digital art to create an immersive experience. And whilst the illustrations are simple, the voice overs are deeply impactful and cause the audience to heavily consider the underlying message; which is to speak up. I would like to create the same experience for my readership, as Year 12 comes with some weighty experiences that aren't commonly dissected; like the pressure to be successful after school etc.

1. Riekie, H 2017, 'The role of the school climate in high school
students’ mental health and identity formation: A South Australian study', British Educational Research Journal, 43, no. 1, pp. 95–123.

Mental Health issues in Australia are well documented, especially within high school students ranging from 15 to 19 years of age. According to a Mission Australia Youth Survey taken in 2014, mental health was identified as a key issue affecting "12.7% of respondents in 2012 [and] increas[ed] to 18.3% in 2014" (Riekie, H 2017); illuminating this as a perpetuating issue. Furthermore, the Australian Bureau of Statistics state that young people carry "the greatest burden of mental illness" and over "40% of young Australians" have developed severe stress regarding school and study problems (Riekie, H 2017). The findings within this article are particularly useful when making justifications for Moo Moo's mission with a young audience within reach. As well as driving an effective call to action, which would be to purchase Moo Moo to combat the effects of this pandemic.

2. Maxim, J 2020, Adobe Premiere Pro Classroom in a Book (2020 release), Adobe Press, O'reilly.

This handbook is a useful source which I will be frequently referring back to, as it teaches the basics of Premier Pro. By the end of this assessment, I hope to have advanced my skills in organising media, creating transitions, professional composition and adding effects; which I believe this book will help me achieve. As seen in Figure 1.1, this book also will familiarise me with the tools featured on Premier Pro and their coexisting functions; assisting me when producing my promotional video for Moo Moo.

3. Mullin, R 2016, Shoppernomics : how to shorten and focus the shoppers' routes to purchase / Roddy Mullin and Colin Harper., Routledge, London ; New York.

This source dissects Shoppernomics, based on research done in the US and UK which shows the psychological path taken by a potential buyer. Applying the laws of Shoppernomics to Moo Moo Magazine will help me identify ways in which I can create a need for my product. According to the source, "0.9 seconds [is] the time marketers have to convince shoppers to see" their product; thats almost a third of the time I have to promote Moo Moo within my video. Reading this book will therefore advance my knowledge as to what elements I should embed throughout my website and video to target a young female demographic.

De Bono's Six Thinking Hats

De Bono, the inventor of "lateral thinking", formulated a 'thinking method' to help individuals make decisions with a multifaceted approach (Mind Tools Content Team 2022). These facets are shown through different coloured hats, hence the 'six thinking hats'.
https://www.mindtools.com/ajlpp1e/six-thinking-hats

Therefore, De Bono's thinking hats can be applied to my promotional video:
Blue Hat = Overview and Organising

Process control: This is how I will approach my promotional video in case the green or black hat approaches (critical OR creative).

Write my treatment

Create a detailed storyboard

Create an effective call to action

Film Content - referring back to my story board

Use sources to help navigate Premier Pro

Edit videos to fit within the guideline of 30 seconds

Focus: To convey a sense of unity towards Year 12 girls, that is produced by the content within Moo Moo.

Big Picture: Ultimately this video should empower young women to start searching for resources that prepare them for life outside of school.

Red Hat = Feelings

Fears: That Year 12's wont see Moo Moo as a necessity, that the video wont reach the correct audience, that Year 12 girls wont be emotionally effected by my advert.

Impact on Others: I would like to empower young women to step into their 'next' with an open mind, whilst also realising that there is no recipe fro adulting but you can be supported by a community of people who are walking through the same season. Through the content within my promotional video, I would like to convey the importance of rekindling your inner child because her future matters too. Furthermore, I would like this to take an emotional toll on my audience, leading to the realisation that many other young women are experiencing the same confusing and exciting process that is growing up.

Feelings: I am really passionate about empowering the females around me, and making them realise that they each have a unique destiny; despite what others think or say. I believe that the school system puts a lot of pressure on young people to have their futures figured out, without even preparing them for life after school. This is why i created Moo Moo, as I believe it is an effective tool for Year 12 students to have throughout their last year of high school, to validate their confusing feelings and inspire them to boldly step into their future.

White Hat = Facts
What information do I have, and what is lacking?

Because Moo Moo came out of a project I worked on last year, I feel that I have thoroughly researched my target audience and henceforth, I know how to effectively reach them.

However, I do not know how to use Premier Pro, the program required to create my promotional video. I will combat this lack of knowledge by taking Adobe masterclasses, whilst also asking my friends studying a bachelor of Film and Television for their tips and tricks

Black Hat = Critical Thinking

Problem: My message not being conveyed properly, and only young people understanding the symbolism and cinematic choices. This is a concern as my target audience is not only Year 12 girls, but I am also trying to market towards parents who will be purchasing their daughters Moo Moo.

Weaknesses: Magazines do not frequently market their new issues in promotional videos, this is because print media relies other forms of communication. I fear that because of this norm, my promotional video will look out of place and awkward.

Green Hat = Focuses on Creativity
Creative thinking:

In the video I would like to use intertextuality and resemble the Mad Tea Party scene from Alice in Wonderland - as this should evoke some nostalgia within my readership and foster their inner child.

As magazines are not widley promoted in video format, i would like to cinematically recreate the front cover of my magazine (leaving a little easter egg)

The font cover is a picnic spread that infers 'Year 12 is not a picnic'; something which my Year 12 coordinator said to me and therefore holds sentiment.

To further this theme, I would like to voiceover an older girl saying "because Year 12 is not a picnic", following a younger girl saying "and my future matters"; evoking sentimental feelings.

I would like to communicate light, dreamy, delicate and feminine themes throughout my video. I will do this by using a foggy camera lens, mystical music and delicate music.

I could convey that it is a magazine I'm marketing by zooming into the picnic basket on the front cover and transitioning to a real life picnic; inferring that the reader has entered into the magazine.

Refine & Develop my idea:

Begin with a mid shot of a young girl reading my magazine, and zoom into the picnic basket on my front cover.

This will then transition into the group of girls (young and old) congregated around a picnic rug, reading my magazine.

Over this montage will be mystical music and muted laughing to show the positive impact of Moo Moo.

This will then transition to a mid-shot of an older girl saying "because Year 12 is not a picnic"

To a young girl saying "and my future matters"

And the Moo Moo logo on the screen

Yellow Hat = Focuses on Value Benefits and Why Something Should Work

I believe I will be able to reach my audience because I am near their age and know what is effective by observing my own behaviour

I have access to equipment and people of knowledge who can make my video look and feel professional

What is the message you wish to promote in your video?

I would like to emphasise the sense of unity, empowerment and belonging that is created by reading an issue of Moo Moo Magazine; this will be communicated by using visual symbolism. I would like to display this by congregating girls between the ages of 10-18 around a picnic spread, which is displayed on the front cover of Moo Moo. My target audience is Year 12 girls, however, our final year of schooling is determined by various factors which have effected us whilst growing up; hence the incorporation of younger girls. I will also incorporate some intertextuality by juxtaposing this mis-en-scene to the tea party in Alice in Wonderland; and henceforth will play mystical music to evoke nostalgia. Furthermore, to create a desire and need for this magazine I will use a contrasting voice over, where an older girl states "because Year 12 is not a picnic" and a younger girl states "and my future matters"; evoking pathos and concreting a call to action.

How is your video ‘creative’ and different to those that already exist? (are you taking a new approach? Focusing on a new perspective? Targeting a new audience?)

I believe that I have found a niche gap in the market, meaning that I have the freedom of creating a completely fresh concept. Although I am pulling cinematic inspiration from sources listed within this assignment, I am theming the promo video based on the content in my magazine. Magazines usually approach promotional content with a harsh editorial aesthetic, I would like to foster the opposite and make Moo Moo an inviting place for young women to come and feel empowered as they are. As far as frames go, I would like to adopt the concept of 'ripped paper', shown in 'The Road we've had to walk' by Woman said. In the context of my advertisment, I wont be adding illustrations but instead will be using the window as a frame to show young women uniting together around a picnic; as if we were scrapbooking memories!

Attention: Amidst the mediocre advertisements in the magazine world, I believe that I can convey Moo Moo in a way which evokes desire through cinematic techniques. To grab my audiences attention, I will keep the first 5 seconds of my advertisement silent. This will be the first magazine shot which transitions into an dreamy picnic with delicate music. To sustain the attention of my audience I will ensure that they are represented throughout my advertisement and therefore have someone to relate to.

Interest: Being a student who graduated in 2022, I know the contextually relevant battles that todays Year 12's face in their final year of high school. This can range from eating disorders to friendship problems; but still seem to exist as taboo topics. I remember conversing with some of the girls in my year level and having a revelation that we were all experiencing the same trials; talking about this brought a sense of comfort and community that can only be felt when we came together. I know that throughout the business of school, all I longed for were the quiet moments where I could have deep conversations and reflect on my growth over the past few years. This is something which I want to portray and I believe that many other young women crave this very thing; which is unity and empowerment.

Desire: The storyline of my promotional video will be endorsed by two main factors; unity and empowerment whilst growing up. I will show that Moo Moo provides both of these things by displaying young women coming together around the basis of Moo Moo; ensuring that it is portrayed as a magazine that aims to empower. Additionally, I will show the unprecedented process of growing up by juxtaposing the ages of girls used in my advertisement; displaying the importance discussing these taboo topics at every age and therefore marketing Moo Moo as a tool to do so.

Action: I want my audience to have their own personal revelation after watching my advertisement. I aim to open their eyes to the times that they have been put down or oppressed by situations throughout their schooling. As well as making them see that there is a community of women who are experiencing the same thing. After being emotionally effected by my call to action, my aim is to create a desire to hold this magazine in their hands. I want them to see Moo Moo as a tool that will facilitate empowerment to help them confidently step into this new season, that is adulthood.

The story line first begins by following a young girl who sits playfully in a field to read the first issue of Moo Moo. Suspense is developed as the audience hears nothing but silence for the first 5 seconds. As she opens the book, the audience sees the front cover and therefore knows that this promo video is about a magazine. The audience then sees a closer view of the picnic display on the front cover, which transitions into a black screen.

Mystical music then commences the next transition, which is a real picnic; as if the magazine has transported the young girl into her future. This concept was taken from the famous storyline of Alice in Wonderland, where Alice falls down the rabbit hole into a mystical land. This symbolises the introspective topics that are discussed within Moo Moo, which aim to enlighten and empower young women to fall into their future.

The audience then sees a group of girls congregated around a picnic setting, reading Moo Moo magazine. Different frames show young girls and women talking and reading to one another. This theme of unity is built upon through their tight proximity and muffled laughing.

Furthermore, amidst the laughing the audiences focus is drawn to an older girl that says "because Year 12 is not a picnic" and fades back to the young girl in the field saying "and my future matters". This speech is typed whilst being spoken to increase the memorability of Moo Moo's message; which is preparing and walking young women into their future endeavours.

The audience will then see on the screen a red background and in white writing, "purchase Moo Moo today", following a link to a platform where you can purchase the magazine.

Although I am not promoting a perfume, visually, this commercial is breathtaking. I admire the 70s theme that is consistently portrayed throughout it; in the costumes, props, hue, grain and even mannerisms. Furthermore, Luchford has taken ordinary tasks and made them glamorous and on brand. In a similar way, I would like to take the 'boring' idea of reading a magazine, and portray it as imaginative and fun!

How do you think your target audience feels about your product before they’ve seen your video?

Considering my target audience is digital natives, they are probably quite hesitant towards my product as it is print media. I also think that not many young women see the value of self-care throughout Year 12, so this is probably something that they think would be a waste of time and money.

How do you want them to feel after they’ve seen your video?'

After seeing my promotional video, I hope that they become attached to the idea of dissecting those taboo topics for the benefit of their future self. I believe that a desire to purchase the product would also be planted within them to unify them with the women around them in such divided times.

What tone/s or emotion/s will you need to convey to convince your audience of your promotional message?'

- Empowerment
- Unity
- Passion
- Nostalgia
- Reflective
- Escape from reality
- Playfulness
- Joy
- Womanhood

Which colours best represent these emotions? Why?

Red and white are the fundamental colours of Moo Moo's branding, as they resemble a checkered picnic rug, "because Year 12 is not a Picnic"; but they also can infer passion and playfulness. However, when I think about empowerment and joy; the colour yellow comes to mind. Furthermore, pink is consistently known to evoke nostalgia and feelings of nurturing; which is ultimately the point of creating the Moo Moo community.

Which fonts best represent these emotions? Why?

Moo Moo's logo consists of the font "Chubby Rounded". I employed this font strategically as I felt as though it looked like a child had written it with a big black marker; further evoking nostalgia. To also accompany this I have downloaded PT Mono, which is a typeface that resembles the product of a typewriter. I will use this font to type out what the voice-over says, reinforcing the message and also highlighting that the things we have experienced in the past need to be dealt with in out future.

I believe that this delicate font will enhance the nostalgic feel throughout my website, as well as providing legibility as the characters are evenly spaced. I will also endorse this font through the voiceovers within my commercial video; providing continuity.

As human beings, "we are able to perceive personality in things and form a relationship based on that personality"; these personal undertones can be supported through things like typography (Alliota 2013). When designing Moo Moo, I tried to be intentional with typography; this led me to choose a typeface that exuded a fun and informal personality (Alliota 2013). Chubby Rounded is a sans-serif font that has been distorted to resemble the act of a child writing it out with a big white marker; evoking nostalgia. Furthermore, this font feels inviting, which further emphasises the mission of Moo Moo; to create a community of Year 12 girls that will support one another through trials and triumphs.

The attached picture displays my chosen colour palette for my promotional video. I think that this visually describes the audience of Moo Moo as the colours reflect femininity, leading to empowerment. Psychologically, I have chosen red as it stimulates excitement and desire; something which is often endorsed by food chains. I feel as though this will form an attraction to the magazine, prioritising it as a necessity purchase. To support this vibrant red, I have formed a muted coral pink, which evokes feelings of nurturing and empowerment. Furthermore, I have formed a creamy-yellow that can be associated with the joyful feelings that are created from being part of the Moo Moo community.
