It has been more than two months and the stalemate between the government and the farmers over the controversial farm laws continues unabated. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court intervened in this matter, staying the implementation of the farm laws and appointing an expert panel to look into the issue. But will the mediation work to defuse the crisis? Already one of the committee members Bhupinder Singh Mann, President, Bhartiya Kisan Unit (BKU), has reportedly recused himself. Is there a genuine possibility of reaching a common ground? What if the committee tomorrow recommends the implementation, and the Supreme Court approves, then what would happen to farmers’ agitation? ETCFO spoke with Jayant Bhatt, advocate, Supreme Court of India, to understand his reading of the Supreme Court’s stay decision and to find out where the story is headed next.
