The themes that are presented within 'The Phoenix' are:

Greed, which is achieved by the destruction of the environment or animals, has unexpected and extreme consequences

This theme within the story can be seen to mimic the effect of corporate greed on the environment. A modern example of this is how many companies damage the environment for money or power, which could lead to the consequences of mass extinction and global warming.

The Character of Mr Poldero can be used as a symbol for capitalist greed. Towsend, being a communist activist when she had written this short story, could also use the Phoenix as a newly discovered resource that Poldero tries to abuse.

The Picture of the BP Oil spill could help illustrate what Warner wants to show. Corporate greed of oil,

The Phoenix which is the central character in the story, gives us a beautiful and vivid imagery. However, it's 'The Phoenix' which gets treated violently and abusively, which makes the readers feel sympathetic and remourseful.

The Phoenix also symbolises immortality. It 'bursts into flames' at the end of its life and rise up from its ashes, but at the same time, it gives life to another Phoenix.

In a minute or two everything was burned to ashes, and some thousand people, including Mr Poldero, perished in the blaze."

This line is able to boldly express Townsend's point, in how that there will be extreme consequences by treeing the animal in a bad way, fueled by your own personal greed.

The way the line bluntly says that "some thousand people" had "perished in the blaze' shows how the world really is, and how in reality, everything such as a life could end so easily.

The Phoenix is not a story that is written in a poetic fashion - it is more to-the-point and describes events just as they happened. This kind of language is similar to the kind used in Aesop's Fables or parables in the bible. They are meant to teach a lesson about morality or life metaphorically through the different characters and symbols in the short story, not by using long and descriptive language. The Phoenix is also quite a short short-story, which also makes it similar to parables.

A good example of the effect of this sort of language is the last line of the story when the phoenix sets itself on fire and the place burns down. The event is just stated in a very matter-of-fact tone: "In a minute or two everything was burned to ashes, and some thousand people, including Mr Poldero, perished in the blaze." The bluntness gives an almost cynical or sarcastic tone of voice.

As shown above, the events in this story are written very chronologically and simply. By first showing Lord Strawberry and the kind way he treated the bird, the author emphasises how very cruel Mr Poldero is. The simplicity of the story makes it easy to read and is sort of deceiving because its not just a story of Mr Poldero; he is represents us, of humanity and our greed and selfish desires.

As well as the story being about greed and the extremes one will go for it, I think it almost mocks the human need to view grotesque things. Many people gathered to see a phoenix light itself on fire, of a phoenix to die. It symbolises the fascination society has for the sensational and surrealistic things. It also tells us the repercussions for messing with the natural order of things.

Warner makes a very satisfying ending. It shows how repetitive violence and greed can end up in major consequences. Mr Poldero's actions towards the phoenix gets worse towards the end. Yet, by abusing one thing for a long time, 1000 people die and 'perish in the blaze' all because of the last and the worst action Mr Poldero did to the Phoenix. The ashes that came from the burning bird, engulfs the people who came to watch a bird end its life in front of many people.
