It is a nearly perfect sphere of hot plasma, with internal convective motion that generates a magnetic field via a dynamo process. It is by far the most important source of energy for life on Earth. One million Earths can fit inside the sun. However the sun is considered a medium sized star. Betelgeuse is in the Orion constellation and it is 400 times larger! The sun is a giant ball of Hydrogen gas made heat through nuclear fusion. Unlike nuclear fission (atoms split apart and  create radiation), nuclear fusion makes atoms ran into each other. This creates cleaner and hotter reactions which makes the sun burn bright. Its orbit around the Sun takes only 87.97 days, the shortest of all the planets in the Solar System. It is named after the Roman deity Mercury, the messenger of the gods. Since Mercury's axis does not tilt, the equator is burning hot. Temperatures on Mercury are extreme and H20 fills craters in the shadowed poll. Mercury has an odd sunrise and sunset. Depending on where you are, you would see the sun rise and set in a different way. Mercury terrain is very rocky.
