Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine. Signs and symptoms include: cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea or constipation, or both. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a chronic condition that will need to be managed in the long term.

Only a small number of people with irritable bowel syndrome develop severe signs and symptoms. Some people can control their symptoms by managing diet, lifestyle and stress. More severe symptoms can be treated with medication and symptom counseling
Signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) vary. The most common ones include:

Abdominal pain, cramping or bloating that usually goes away completely or partially after a bowel movement
Excess gas
Diarrhea or constipation - Sometimes bouts of diarrhea and constipation alternate
Mucus in the stool
Most people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have times when their signs and symptoms get worse and times when symptoms improve or disappear altogether.

Cases where a doctor's review becomes necessary
See a doctor if you have a persistent change in bowel habits or other signs and symptoms of IBS, as it may indicate a more serious condition such as colon cancer. More severe signs and symptoms include:

Weight loss
Diarrhea at night
Rectal bleeding
Anemia associated with iron deficiency
Unexplained vomiting
Difficulty swallowing
Persistent pain that does not relieve after flatulence or other risk factors
Many people have occasional signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). But you may be more likely to develop the syndrome if:

I was young. Irritable Bowel Syndrome occurs most frequently in people under the age of 50.
You are female. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is more common among women in the United States. Estrogen therapy before or after menopause is also a risk factor for IBS.
You have a family history of irritable bowel syndrome. Genes may play a role, for example, when factors in the family environment or a combination of genes and environment are involved.
You have a mental health problem. Anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems are associated with irritable bowel syndrome. A history of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse may also be one
Risk factors.
Complications
Chronic constipation or diarrhea can cause hemorrhoids.

In addition, irritable bowel syndrome is associated with the following:

Reduced quality of life: Many people with moderate to severe irritable bowel syndrome report a reduced quality of life. Research indicates that irritable bowel syndrome patients are three times more absent from work than people without intestinal symptoms.
Mood disorders: Signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome can lead to depression and anxiety. Depression and anxiety can exacerbate irritable bowel syndrome.
Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome can be triggered by the following factors:

Food: The role of food allergies or food intolerances in triggering IBS has not yet been fully understood. It is rare for a true food allergy to trigger irritable bowel syndrome, but many people experience the worst symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome when consuming certain foods or beverages, including wheat, dairy products, citrus fruits, beans, cabbage, milk, and soft drinks.
Psychological stress: Most people with irritable bowel syndrome have their worst signs and symptoms or have frequent recurrences during periods of increased psychological stress. But although psychological stress may aggravate symptoms, it does not cause them to appear.
Hormones: Women are twice as likely to have irritable bowel syndrome than men, and this may indicate the role hormonal changes play, so many women find that signs and symptoms worsen during or near the menstrual cycle.
The diagnosis
There is no test to definitively diagnose irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Your doctor will likely start with a thorough medical history, physical examination, and tests to rule out other conditions. If you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with diarrhea, you will likely be screened for gluten intolerance (celiac disease). After other conditions have been ruled out, your doctor will likely use one of these groups of diagnostic criteria for IBS (IBS). IBS):

Rome Standards. These criteria include abdominal pain and discomfort that last on average for at least one day a week during the last three months, and are accompanied by at least two of these factors: pain and discomfort related to defecation, changes in the number of times a bowel movement, or changes in the consistency of stool.
Manning criteria. These criteria focus on relieving pain through passing stools, on incomplete bowel movements, mucus in stool, and changes in stool consistency. The more symptoms, the greater the risk of developing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Type of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). For treatment purposes, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can be divided into three types, according to symptoms: The colon is predominantly constipated, predominantly diarrhea, or mixed.
Your doctor will also likely evaluate whether you have other signs or symptoms that might indicate another, more serious condition. These signs and symptoms include:

Signs or symptoms appearing after age 50.
Weight loss
Rectal bleeding
fever
Frequent nausea or vomiting
Abdominal pain, especially if it is not

The human digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract plus the accessory organs of digestion (the tongue, salivary glands, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder). Digestion involves the breakdown of food into smaller and smaller components, until they can be absorbed and assimilated into the body. The process of digestion has three stages: the cephalic phase, the gastric phase, and the intestinal phase
.The first stage, the cephalic phase of digestion, begins with gastric secretions in response to the sight and smell of food. This stage includes the mechanical breakdown of food by chewing, and the chemical breakdown by digestive enzymes, that takes place in the mouth.

Saliva contains digestive enzymes called amylase, and lingual lipase, secreted by the salivary glands and serous glands on the tongue. The enzymes start to break down the food in the mouth. Chewing, in which the food is mixed with saliva, begins the mechanical process of digestion. This produces a bolus which can be swallowed down the esophagus to enter the stomach.

The second stage of digestion then begins in the stomach with the gastric phase of digestion. Here the food is further broken down by mixing with gastric acid until it passes into the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine.

The third stage begins in the duodenum with the intestinal phase of digestion, where partially digested food is mixed with a number of enzymes produced by the pancreas. Digestion is helped by the chewing of food carried out by the muscles of mastication, the tongue, and the teeth, and also by the contractions of peristalsis, and segmentation. Gastric acid, and the production of mucus in the stomach, are essential for the continuation of digestion.

Peristalsis is the rhythmic contraction of muscles that begins in the esophagus and continues along the wall of the stomach and the rest of the gastrointestinal tract. This initially results in the production of chyme which when fully broken down in the small intestine is absorbed as chyle into the lymphatic system. Most of the digestion of food takes place in the small intestine. Water and some minerals are reabsorbed back into the blood in the colon of the large intestine.
