Students need to have a comprehensive understanding of the options for post-high school training. Apprenticeships, On-the-Job Training, Community College/Technical College, Universities etc and what pathways are available to them for their desired goal

I think that students need to know the basics of what their future requires including how to be whole people. If they want to go to college what does that take? If they want to go into the arts, what does that take? How are they not just workers and have identity beyond their jobs

An understanding of how to find information on an issue in our world that does not just come from their existing personal bias. I usually recommend students pursue info from a left-leaning source, a right-leaning source and an international source for each issue they are learning about.

They need to be open minded. Learn from those before you who have institutional knowledge. There is so much to learn, you never stop.

Spaces where failure is not only okay but celebrated

Teach kids to fail and make mistakes. Life is a process, not a goal. Learning through the process of that. High schools emphasize such high stakes things; from that, kids learn failure is an end point and feel like they are done. Having more spaces where kids can be successful in failure and learn that failure is not an endpoint. More opportunity for exploration and trying out things.

Students need basic skills in the basic subject areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, health and fitness, and communication. Students will choose those subjects they are interested in for advanced studies. Students need to learn to love to learn and they love to learn about what they are interested in and can learn the basic subjects through what they are interested in such as the arts.

In my work with regional employers, the consistent message that I am hearing is that they can teach someone to weld, but they aren't willing to teach soft skills, they expect applicants to have that skill-set at the time of application.

Critical thinking and media literacy--how we process and act (or not) on information we receive. This impacts civic actions and the community, so being able to have a good foundation in that would be ideal.

Again with the media literacy and critical thinking bandwagon--being able to know how to ask questions and interpret information--whether that's civic info, a commercial, an ad for a job, medical info etc.

was starting to say that when it comes to navigating financial aid and college registration, high school does not prepare them for this. Typically, also, students of that age are considered adult and information is not shared with parents who might be able to assist. This can lead to students making costly errors and taking classes that aren't necessarily the most useful for their future goals

Students need to have experience in the basic education subject areas by teachers who know what they are teaching and love what they are teaching. It may be that teachers in the basic subjects of reading, writing, mathematics (financial literacy), science, history and civics, the arts - experience in dance, music, theatre, visual arts, and media arts, health and fitness, and communication. Internships are essential. Students will tell us what they love to learn if we ask them. We can teach them everything through what they love to learn.

I would like to see earlier ability based, verses age based, learning at individual student comfort level, even if this means multi-aged classes within reason. This may allow for mentorships to develop as well.
