Bilingual Education was an amendment that made BE a part of federal education policy in 1967; therefore, schools would receive funding for providing classes in the students' home language (Baker & Wright, 2021).

I think this event is important to Bilingual Education today because it laid the foundation for future bilingual laws. It let people know that all students were important and worthy of an education. Specifically, during a time of turmoil, when students were punished for speaking their home language.

Lau vs Nichols

In 1974, the US Supreme Court ruled that students who cannot understand instructions are not obtaining a "meaningful education" (Baker & Wright, 2021). Lau remedies were created to ensure students receive ESL instruction as well as other supports.

This event is important in Bilingual Education today because it was the beginning of enforcing that ELL or MLL receive adequate support.

No Child Left Behind

NCLB was approved in 2001 and signed into law by President George W. Bush (Baker & Wright, 2021). They removed the Bilingual Education Act, gave English Language Learners the term 'limited English Proficient", and left it to states to fund bilingual programs (Baker & Wright, 2021). Teachers and schools were also held accountable for the high-stakes testing, although they did not have the support of the federal government.

I think this is important for bilingual education because it has been proven that states need the support of the federal government. They need to work as a team to ensure the success of ELL or MLL students.

It was recommended that education be conducted only in English; thirty-four states enacted it (Baker & Wright, 2021).

I think this is important in bilingual education because the sentiment and birth of patriotism created a lot of the views Americans hold on language. These views have influenced future laws and terms that were created.

Re-authorization of the Esther Martinez Native American Languages Preservation Act

This act provides federal grants to schools in Native communities to "fund immersion programs, which will help revive Native languages" (Baker & Wright, 2021).

I think this is important to bilingual education because, as a nation, we owe this to the Native American community. Language is tied to our identity, and they were stripped of their language. From once being punished and forbidden to speak their language, it is important to show that their identity is important.
