The Fukushima Disaster occurred on March 11, 2011. It was caused by an earthquake, measuring up to a 9.0 magnitude, that also triggered a powerful tsunami that overwhelmed nuclear plant, Fukushima Daiichi's, safety systems. This led to the loss of power in the reactor's cooling systems, and core meltdowns in three reactors. This disaster is the worst nuclear disaster since the Chernobyl accident in 1986 in Ukraine.

After the plants meltdown, over 100,000 people were evacuated from the surrounding area of the plant due to the threat of radiation exposure. Many people were forced to leave their homes and some were unable to return home due the exposure of radiation, and many homes were destroyed due to the tsunami and earthquake. The disaster had effects on people even after it occurred, with people suffering from anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Since 2011, there has been no evidence that radiation effected anyone in the long run.

The Fukushima Daiichi Plant cost ¥21 trillion (around $190 billion USD) to clean up, stabilize reactors, and contain radioactive materials.

After the disaster, the soil, water and atmosphere within a 20 kilometer radius contained large amounts of radioactive isotopes. The radiation also contaminated soil for crops, and were found to have unsafe levels of radiation, which led to the destruction and restrictions on food production in the affected regions.

The "Fukushima 50"

A group of 50 workers remained at the plant in the immediate aftermath of the disaster to stabilize the reactors. Despite the extremely dangerous radiation levels, the workers helped prevent the disaster from becoming worse.

The Tsunami

The accident was not only caused by the earthquake, but also by the huge tsunami that followed. The tsunami waves, some reaching heights over 40 feet, went over the plants sea wall and flooded the critical backup power systems, leading to the reactor cooling failure and the eventual meltdown.

After the accident, Japan temporarily shut down all of it's nuclear plants for safety inspections and reassessments to make sure another incident wouldn't happen. They addressed this in a technocentric way, shutting down all nuclear plants to assess any problem or flaw a plant could have, and fix it so it wouldn't happen again.

The disaster also showed how the effects of radiation can have long lasting effects on the environment, causing people's minds to think less of nuclear energy.
