I think this image is very poignant—in a break from the fighting, you see soldiers taking whatever time they can spare to write letters home and connect with loved ones. It's a reminder of the personal side of the war and how difficult it must've been to leave one's home behind (often at a very young age) to go fight a war in an unknown place.

I think this image is important to view, as we often don't immediately think of the people, especially women and children as depicted, that were displaced during this war. And the war impacted far more than just the people fighting in it.

This image depicts a field hospital on the Serbo-Bulgarian war frontier in 1915. While many people initially saw war as a path to glory, this image shows the gory and dangerous reality of battle. I like how even from far away, this image shows somber and smoky war and the desperation of these men as they received treatment in the middle of a field.

In this photograph, a U.S. Marine Corps medic is tending the wounds of an injured soldier in the trenches. This image reveals the consequences of World War I. I chose this picture because while some Europeans were celebrating the idea of war, the reality was cruel. Soldiers had to cope with trauma, injuries, malnutrition, illness, and some even died. Even after the war ended, the surviving soldiers were left with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This photograph shows the true dangers of warfare, and why these battles should not be romanticized.

This image depicts a man suffering from trench foot, a condition that was caused by the prolonged exposure to damp, cold and unsanitary conditions in the trenches. Many soldiers' feet were amputated when it was left untreated. I think this image really represents the terrible realities of war and the harsh life inside the trenches. Soldiers' desire and excitement for war disintegrated soon after they began to experience these cruel realities.

This picture depicts soldiers unconscious at their barricades from exposure to poison gas. The poison gas, used by the Germans beginning in 1917, killed and injured over thousands of people. Although introduced by the Germans, in 1918, the US first used poison gas by firing at the Germans. Poison gas was an effective strategy to weaken enemies; however, it was proved to be very fatal, killing many Germans, Americans, and others.

Similar celebrations took place around Europe in support of the war. Europeans had no idea how much damage the war would cause.

This photo stood out to me as it revealed the forceful destruction that was so unexpected in the war. This photo reveals the extent to how naive and incorrect many people were in celebrating war and heroic acts. Few expected that their homes, filled with valuables and memories, would quickly become debris at the expense of the war. Although this photo does not show the affects of the war on people's mental state and well-being, it reveals the extent to which war affects communities and the structures within.
