Scott Tierney - Inclusion is ensuring that every student, regardless of disability, gets a quality education in an environment where they feel comfortable and welcome. Inclusion in one word is an all-embracing societal ideology. Inclusion ensures that students with disabilities have the resources they need to learn and grow in the educational environment and ensures that students with disabilities can learn alongside their peers in general education classrooms. Inclusion arises in the context of special education with an individualized education plan or 504 plan, and is built on the notion that it is more effective for students with disabilities to have experiences for them to be more successful in social interactions leading to further success in life.

It is important to not single out specific students and to make sure that the classroom is consistently running in a way that is beneficial to everyone in it. The most important thing about inclusion is making sure not that you are teaching everyone, but that everyone is learning, whether they need extra help or not. Making sure all of your students are comfortable and confident in your teaching abilities and their learning abilities is a big part of it as well.

By doing this, you not only ensure that you follow every IEP or 504 Plan to a T (because if you are creating a home then you obviously would do anything to give them the supports and services they need to succeed), but also ensure that every child, not just the ones who need accommodations or modifications receive special attention as it is our job to serve every child.

Inclusion is educating students with disabilities along side neurotypical peers to the maximum extent appropriate. Inclusion use to be referred to as mainstreaming which is when they simply just put students with disabilities into a classroom and taught them the way they did everyone else. With inclusion teachers are now required to provide the appropriate accommodations that give students with disabilities a leveled playing field. Providing information in various different formats is a UDL approach that provides students multiple different ways to view and understand content. This benefits all students, not just students with disabilities.

Being able to have all different types of learners within one classroom has so many benefits. The children not only learn from eachother but also helping eachother grow. I think that inclusion is great. Students with disabilities shouldnt feel bad that they have to go to a different classroom or place to learn they should be included in the general education. In todays classrooms inclusion is present and I believe that all teachers should have special education degree as well to help prepare them for the inclusion that is happening within the general education classroom.

In my opinion, inclusion is allowing all students, including those who are disabled, to learn within a classroom with a teacher who is qualified to help them obtain the information that is necessary to succeed. It is very important that every student receives the best education that they can get. It is also important for every student to feel included in every activity and not fall behind during lessons. If a student falls behind, it will affect the path they take throughout their schooling. When the teacher includes the students into activities, it will lead to them having better social skills and being more comfortable around their peers. -Melissa Molinaro

Inclusion classrooms are important fro students with and without disabilities.

How I View Inclusion

As an aspiring educator, I view inclusion as something that involves including everyone. What I mean by this is also being inclusive towards parents of those with disabilities and making sure they are just as involved and can use their voice just as the teachers can. Regarding a child with disabilities, inclusion is making sure they are included in the general education classroom or in a least restrictive environment for them. Not only can inclusion benefit students with disabilities, but it also benefits students without disabilities and if the teacher is a good classroom manager, it is handled properly. By this, I mean that the teacher formulates lessons that talk about becoming a classroom community and the importance of respecting and including everyone. When a teacher does this, it helps students to see the student(s) with disabilities on the inside and view their personality, instead of letting their disability define them. -Natalie Overbeck
