Most of my participatory music experiences are with church worship. I chose this song because it is not only my all-time favorite but allows me to connect with my higher power in a multitude of ways. I can't quite explain it, but there is such a power behind hundreds of voices singing as one. To me, it's not just singing, its healing, revival, and asking for life. Songs like this are able to touch my heart in ways unimaginable and when the music breaks and all you hear is the roar of voices, I just break out in tears. I'll never know why but this type of participatory music brings out emotions that sometimes I can't get out myself. It all traces back to when I gave my life to Jesus Christ. I remember I lost it, tears flowing out of my eyes, when I heard this song acapella with the most beautiful voices at a church camp (my very first one). See, I had heard see songs before but after I had made the decision to commit my life to Christ, these type of songs and participatory music has held a special place in my heart

This image correlates directly with quote number one, "Participatory music is like this--it is about the opportunity of connecting in special ways with others and experiencing flow." (Turino 35). That is what my church is all about, being present, being there for one another, and experiencing the flow of the Holy Spirit together. I know for a fact all my connections are deeper with my church family than any other of my friends AND the one thing that allows us to connect on that level is music. Music takes us to our special place where we are given that opportunity to connect in a special way and even heal what we feel is broken. Now I know I'll talk a lot about church in this padlet, but when I'm not worshipping through song, you can bet that I am having a pretty amazing karaoke jam session in my car or at a party with my friends.

Representational Music, although very different, still allows me to connect in a variety of ways. Half the time I have no idea what the lyrics mean or what language is being presented, but the power and emotion belted behind each syllable is extraordinary. Like this video, the man has never sang in front of anyone before and you can just hear the emotion behind his performance. Granted his story and the emotions of the crowd contribute to the emotional appeal, the true beauty in the performance. The only experience I have with presentational music is watching videos like this and conducting which is explained in the following section

When I think of presentational music, this is the first image that pops into my mind. Although a rather cliché image, I actually do have some experience with conducting. Granted this was back in middle school, I was terrible at it and have the utmost respect for any musical conductor. I think this image directly appeals to quote number 3, "Because of its ability to present feeling and emotion directly, without the intervention of words or depicted objects" (Cook, 19).Conductors express their music with their baton and body language and I think that is so impressive. Through the conductor, the music is given that ability to present feeling and emotion without words or key objects.

The biggest personal connection between Participatory and Representational is the emotion. Both styles allow me to feel emotions that sometimes I am not able to, and even bring healing into my life. Throughout this online class and the completion of the quizzes, I have been able to appreciate that more and clearly see the true beauty in both forms.
