- The first act to levy taxes on morphine and opium took place

1909
- The Smoking Opium Exclusion Act banned the possession, use, and importation of opium for smoking.

1914:
- The Harrison Act taxed the production, distribution, and importation of opium and cocaine

1919: 
- 18th Amendment was passed, which banned the sell,transportation, and production of alcohol
- The Volstead amendment was passed which offered guidelines for the government to enforce prohibition

1933:
- 21st Amendment was ratified

1937:
- The Marijuana Tax Act was passed which put a tax on the sale of weed as the first tax on Marijuana. Didn't criminalize the use of Marijuana, but cracked down on people not buying it from businesses

1970:
- Controlled substances Act which created five "schedules" based on medical application and potential abuse (Ex. LSD, Morphine)

1971:
- Nixon declares the war on drugs

1973:
- Nixon created the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) to control smuggling and drug use

Ronald Reagan
- President Reagan had carried off Nixon's plans for his War on Drugs
- His own wife created a campaign to educate children on the dangers of using drugs
- Created the Anti-Drug Abuse Act which made mandatory minimum prison sentences for specific drug offenses
- It created longer prison sentences for crimes that were similar to others that had smaller offences
