Both Spring and Neap tides have similar effects on the ocean. Neap tides are when the phase of the moon is in the 1st or 3rd quarter phase. This allows for lower tides than usual. On the other hand, Spring tides occur when either the phase of the moon is in the new moon phase or the full moon phase. This allows for higher tides than usual.
