The island - by Vinyl Theatre

The reason I chose this song is because it reminds me of Jack and Ralph. Jack would represent the lyrics "Welcome to the island, no matter what you're hiding, welcome to the island, it sets you free, on the island, let your secrets sleep". The reason for this is because on the island in LOTF this is how Jack felt, he felt free. Ralph represents the lyrics "Don't cast me out, don't deal me out again, i'm just a simple kid with a simple life trying to get out". The reason that Ralph represents these lyrics is because in the end of the novel he was cast out of the group and left on his own because he wanted "to get out" of the island.

I don't wanna dance - COIN

I chose this song to represent the part in the book where the boys kill Simon. The part of the song that says "I feel like everybody's watching" is meant to show what the feast was most likely like in the beginning because of the conflict arising at this point in the novel. The lyrics "I don't wanna dance, I don't know how to dance with you" is what I imagine was going through their heads when the chanting started. The lyrics "I let you down, I know it" represents the 4 boys after Simon is killed at the big feast.

I chose Plans by Oh wonder because I feel like it represents how badly Ralph wants to go back home to his family. The lyrics that really make me think this way are "Iv'e got plans to get to you, you know", "Gonna build a paper plane to float to you", and "All these plans i've been chasing. getting caught up and wasted". The verse "iv'e got plans to get to you, you know" represents Ralph's rescue plan with the fire. "Gonna build a paper plane to float to you" is relevant to the story because it reminds me of the vivid and unrealistic imagination that children seem to have. "All these plans i've been chasing. getting caught up and wasted" seems like something that Ralph would say about Jack and the hunters always disregarding the rescue option.

Rare Hearts - The Growlers

I chose Rare hearts because I felt like this song could be an internal thought that Ralph would have about Jack. The beat that the song has really reminds me of a beach scene so that is another reason I chose it. "Is it too much to dream, that we could forever be rare hearts that never disagree"would be a hope of Ralph's for Jack to stop being so rebellious and for them to be friends again. The lyrics "So let our rare hearts float together, and disappear into the night, live or die in here forever" shows that either way, the boys will live a long life on the island or live a short one.

The reason I chose Body Gold is because I feel like it represents the part of the hunt for Ralph when the naval officer rescues the boys. The lyrics "Before you came 'round I was ready to slow down, before you came 'round I was heading for a small disaster, before you came 'round I was ready to blow me down" show that just before the naval officer found the boys, Ralph was just about ready to give up and let the hunters capture him. When the song sings "We can go until the morning glow, We can go higher and higher and higher" I feel like that signifies how determined and tedious Jack and his hunters were about capturing Ralph.

I chose Chasin' Honey to represent Jack. The verse "Some parts of my brain are probably still sleeping, I wish I could tell but I'm probably still sleeping" and "I may not be conscious but baby I'm honest" represents how Jack in the novel isn't thinking about most of the things he's doing. "Would it let you down if we don't grow up, will it make you proud if we gave up" to me sounds like an argument between Jack and Ralph with Jack asking if it would make Ralph sad if they "don't grow up" and Ralph rebutting with "will it make you proud if we gave up". I feel like "I can see good intentions but we tear them apart" could show that Jack actually does see the good in Ralph's plans but does not care due to his savage nature.

The song Throw Shade makes me think of what Ralph would be like after the boys have been rescued. I feel like when the boys went back home Ralph was thinking "Good riddance
I mean I'm really gonna miss you, though Good riddance I mean it's oh so sad to see you go". I like to imagine that after the boys are rescued they are being interviewed by multiple news channels and that Jack is spewing lies about what happened on the island and Ralph is at home thinking "Don't you get me started I don't believe a word you say." The lyric "Your dead to me, R.I.P" is what I think Ralph's feelings for Jack are once they're away from the island.

The song Dazzle represents all of the pride that Jack has. The verse "You’re getting higher than the ceiling lights, and falling hard enough to lose the fight" shows that Jack is in way over his head and how he thinks he's the best on the island. "Not in it for the money, just in it for the thrill, living in the moment, paying for the kill" shows that Jack hunts for the thrill of it and the outcome. "Dazzle me, dazzle me, dazzle me with gold, you’ll never be what you wanna be with all that money, that money, dazzle me, dazzle me, throw away your gold, you’ll never be what you wanna be with all that money, that money, that money" makes me think of Ralph talking to Jack about his pride, where money and gold are pride and that if Jack really wanted to impress Ralph, he would have to give up all of his "Money". The lyric "In the mirror you’re a work of art, but this is real life, real life" signifies that to somebody inside of the island they see him as a "Work of art", but if society were to see him it would be disgusted at such a sight

I chose Lifetimes because to me it sounded like what an argument between the hunters and Ralph when the island is set ablaze would sound like. The hunters would be the ones yelling "Hands up for a miracle, up high for a miracle, oh the smoke don’t stop but we let it go,
but we let it go on and on" when they set the island on fire. Ralph on the other hand would be arguing about being civilized and saying something like "Will someone take a ride with me?
Back to the planet sanity" where 'Planet sanity" is order and reason.

I chose this song to represent the interaction between Simon and the actual "Lord of the Flies". I chose High on Humans because of the fact that some of the lyrics I can imagine being said to Simon by the LOTF. Lyrics like "Now I'm locking eyes with a silent stranger, don't run, don't hide", this fits into the conversation so well because during their talk, Simon can do nothing but stare at the LOTF. "Do you have the time? Do you hate your life?", I can see the LOTF asking Simon this while he patronizes him and makes him feel worried and sick. In other words, the LOTF is 'Getting high on humans", he likes to see them struggle with the Beast when he knows the real answer.

All about you shows Jack's feelings towards Ralph and how he thinks that all Ralph cares about is his orders. "You walk around the town like you born in a golden crown" and "You're so full of it, and we're so sick of it" are both ways that Jack would see Ralph. "Golden crown" representing how Ralph sees himself as the true leader of the boys, and Ralph being "So full of it" shows how by the end of the novel the boys are done with Ralph's orders. The very important lyric to me is "You say it's not enough, you're sipping from a silver cup, but is that how she brought you up to blame the hand that feeds ya?" because it would show that Jack believes that Ralph is striving on the island due to Jack's own doings and all Ralph does to repay him is to yell and make a fit.

I chose this song to represent Simon because of the selfless imagery brought on by the lyrics. The words "I never get high when you're feeling low" remind me of Simon because Simon was a very nurturing character in the novel. "Did I, did I, did I do you wrong? Did I, did I, did I do you right?", I feel like this is a reoccurring internal conflict with Simon where he knows the right answer to a problem that the group is facing, but either he doesn't speak up or gets his idea excused I feel like this is what he's thinking in those moments, this feeling is amplified due to how many times it is repeated in the song. The lyric that I feel most perfectly describes Simon in the novel is "and I will never let you go" because not once did Simon ever state that he was going to abandon one side of the group for the other.
