An epic poem is a lengthy narrative that tells a story in a formal and elevated style of lyrical feet and meter. The reason epic poetry is composed in verse is because it was original performed orally and the repetition of sounds made it easier to memorize. Epic poems usually take place so long ago that humans do not have a memory of the extraordinary events being described. These stories were told to entertain and teach the audience a lesson.

Epic Hero

The protagonist of an epic poem is the epic hero. This character demonstrates bravery and courage when they use their superhuman strength to overcome a difficult struggle in which they must save members of society from harm or evil. As the listener or reader observes the character's intelligence and wit they grow to admire the achievements and positive traits revered by society.

Travel long journey

The protagonist must travel far and wide in order to achieve their goals and save society. There are oftentimes conflicts, hurdles, or struggles that cause the journey to be prolonged and circuitous. Obstacles may even alter the protagonist's path forcing them to focus on their goals rather than succumbing to distractions.

While the mortal hero is strong and brave, the protagonist cannot achieve their destined goals without the favor and assistance of mythical gods and goddesses. When obstacles seem too challenging for the main character to overcome, the help of mythological creatures will intervene to ensure they are able to save society.

In "The Odyssey" it teaches perseverance when Odyssey succeeds with more than just strength which reminds the reader to use more than just physical strength. Another lesson is loyalty throughout the book, the ending goal always is to get back home which enforces the value and need of a home and family. Actions having consequences is taught in the book when there are many incidences and accidents which are a result of someone not thinking ahead or realizing what could happen afterwards.

This angered Poseidon, which is why he was such an obstacle to Odysseus. Poseidon created dangurous storms and violent waves to stop Odysseus from reaching his home. Another major enemies of Odysseus was the Suitors. The Suitors were the group of over 100 who invaded his palace and attempted to marry his wife, Penelope. They got in the way greatly because they took over his home, endangered his family, and created all kinds of chaos.
