What?

Sculpture-

Working with clay, because I can easily go down to the shop and buy some.

Sculptures that represent real things, but without aiming for realism. Developing stylised structures- it isn't abstract as it is not representing a concept, but I don't want to make it look like a real 'thing'.

For example- a cartoon, its not meant to be real but you can tell what it is e.g a photo of a pigeon and drawing of a pigeon is representing the same thing.

Inspired by prehistoric sculptures, to create own.

Why?

It is interesting- the art I want to focus on and reference off of is prehistoric and very early art forms. It is interesting seeing how people contextualise themselves and the world around them. They didn't make anything that was exactly real but you can still tell what its meant to be. You can tell how they would have interpreted the world around them. For example, Venus sculptures are found all over the world, such as Europe and Asia. It is an abstract form, but you can tell they are supposed to be women. They may not have a face or correct human proportions but they are supposed to be women. They may by symbols of fertility (due to their proportions), or they may be representations of women and their view of themselves, as they look down at their proportions etc.

I would like to improve on it, because sculpture is a very human art form. Nobody has been taught to do it in a certain way, it is a very basic way of interpreting the world and making art, which makes it more important than things that have taken years to make. People making things for fun rather than because they have been hired or taught to do it in a certain way.

It didn't need to be perfect- making something that does not require a certain standard and get people fame or money. It is just people making things to contextualise the world in the very early days of becoming human, which is very meaningful.

How?

I am going to try and do some concept art first, to make sure I am getting the right kind of thing down and getting a feel for what I will make. Then I am going to try and sculpt something, keeping it as close to what I am representing as possible. I want to leave it how it would have been if it was made 1000s of years ago.

I am going to buy the materials, which is probably going to be clay. I am going to try keep it as close to how it would have been as possible- this is more interesting than trying to make something look old using new shop bought things.

Starting to research sculpture:

Research phase and early concepts:

I have researched concepts before when doing art in college and I have experience in doing this. It is helpful to start with something I have experience in as it means I am beginning with a process that I know will make the end product look good rather than just being completely random. It means I can fall back on my concepts if I am not happy with my first attempt at the sculpture. I can go back and choose another concept that could be realistic. It gives me more confidence to push myself out of my comfort zone starting with this familiar approach.

This is an experiment in figuring out how to draw and thinking about shadows and reflections and different metals. The detail and drawing of corroding metal could make it more authentic. I have looked at a sculpture from the time period I am looking at. This is helping me to work on my concepts and different things from the time period I am focusing on. I will use references to look at something that looks more real, before I work on my own design to make something physical.

"What did you draw?"

Looking for what looks most interesting- choosing three things to draw and will redraw them in different styles.

The three images are examples of early human artwork. Chose three examples that interested me and then did interpretive examples of them.

The first example is a luna lamp, which is like a necklace. I chose that one because I personally find colouring metal to be really annoying and I wanted to challenge myself. I had a limited palette to work with and I am going to try and redo it so that it looks better and more realistic. I have got the basics down like where the shadow and like is. Next I want to use alcohol markers because these have been really useful for starting on a white base and building up the values. Building up the values means the more shading and work at where the light comes from the more realistic it is. This is Irish.

The next example is an early sculpture- one of the first depictions of humans that wasn't abstract. I chose a side profile because I tend to find these really hard to draw and I wanted to challenge myself with what I was doing. It stood out to me when looking at what different things are there. It has marks on it and cracks in the ivory it is made of and I wanted to get those down as well. Because it is Ivory it is a cream colour, which can be really hard to do. I think it might be slightly too yellow but I do like my work to be saturated so I have probably done this subconsciously. This example is a sculpture- I think I could work on how to make it look more 3D, for example putting shading on the outline. This is French.

How are you using these three drawings to help with your process?

There were different angles of the ivory sculpture which was helpful to think about where the light falls on different parts of it. This helps me think about sculpture because it is 3D and it helps me figure out how a sculpture might look from different angles and how each angle looks completely different.

I chose the final one because I like colouring like this. I have drawn things like this before and I like drawing corrosion on the metal. I think I could have done better on the shading so it doesn't look flat. I like the way it's coloured but I could have made it look 3D. I could have added more shadows but I like it because I got a lot of the details from the picture in the line art. I was struggling to do that but I simplified it a lot. This is English.

Now that I have done the first couple of things, I am going to redo them until I am happy with them. Once I have done that, I am going to work on the concept for the sculpture. Once I have done the concept of the sculpture, I can do the sculpture.

To Do:

Over the weekend I will think about my concept, which involves looking up things relating to sculptures around the time of Ice Age and European Culture.

I will get a couple of pictures and make a little moodboard of what I am using of references (including credits). I am used to making moodboards, which will help me in the process as I can have everything to reference- different styles and angles. I struggle with perspective in art and doing something in a 3D medium will be helpful for that which is why I am collating different angles and reference points.

I will take inspiration from these and see what I like.

From there I will draw a few concepts which I could turn into sculptures. I will then narrow down which ones are impractical and which are easier to do. I will think about which look interesting and which my favourite is. It has to be something people will want to look at as well as something I can feasibly make.

Once I have chosen the idea, I will get the materials- clay, water, use a mat or some newspaper or plastic bags to put things on. It will probably be airdrying clay so once I have made the sculpture I can just leave it to dry.

I will aim to do a good piece on the first try. If it doesn't work out I will still take pictures and save it as evidence of my first attempt. If it does work out then I might just be happy with it on my first try

Once I have finished working with the clat it'll be done. A lot of the examples I have seen have not been painted. If they were coloured in the past it is hard to tell what colour it would be as it may have worn away so I want to leave mine as it

I would class weapons as artwork was they are handmade and people have spent time and effort on making- which I would say counts as artwork. I am going to go to the museum and get pictures, and then write some stuff commenting what I have seen and what inspiration I have took from it. I will see if they have anything on the history of the pieces and reflect on what I have seen. I might draw some stuff referencing it, and write about how I can be inspired by it. I will think about what it made me feel and how I might make work relating to it.

The museum is in Newcastle, and I will document my visit to it.

Describe...
