They are used by those with hearing loss, in conjunction with a T-Coil enabled hearing aid, standard headphones or earbuds. Anyone who needs the equipment can qualify without any income requirements. The equipment is yours to use as long as you remain in the state of South Carolina.
At my internship, every classroom is connected to a microphone sound system to accommodate students who may have difficulty hearing.

An AAC Device can be a picture, word or alphabet board or an electronic picture, word or alphabet device with voice output. AAC devices should be used with other ways of communicating--body posture, eye gaze, gestures, sign language, vocalizations, and spoken word approximations to maximize language and communication skills. Augmentative communication can be used by children and adults alike. The goal of this type of technology is to be able to communicate in a functional manner throughout the day. AAC devices are tools used to learn language and functional communication. In order to get this type of device, the individual may work with a team that includes loved ones and either an speech-language pathologist, doctor, occupational therapist, physical therapist, etc. This team looks at the individuals speech and language, motor skills, vision, and more. They look at how you communicate and what you need to be able to do. This information will help them decide what type of AAC system might be best for that individual.

--Ivy Steed

Vehicle modifications can make it possible for people with disabilities to engage in regular activities without having to rely on other people for transportation. This can help give people with disabilities a sense of freedom. South Carolina has driving schools and assistive driving services to train drivers to drive a modified vehicle (one with adaptive technology) before a license is granted. There are certain modified vehicles available for purchase. Medicaid provides free transportation to medical visits for those who qualify. Dial-A-Ride-Transit (DART), an advance reservation, shared ride transportation service, is also available for people with disabilities.
-Cassidy Tallman

Pointing devices can help people with dexterity weaknesses. Products including electronics such as joy sticks, touch pads, or track balls can be used to help those with weaknesses in dexterity. Arm, wrist, and finger movements are all compromised when there is a dexterity weakness so any of these products can make it easier on the people who need something less demanding on their hands for operation. There are even eye gaze systems that follow the eyes of people to scroll the mouse around on the screen. This is a big modification for people with disabilities and can transform the lives of people who depend on these technologies to live.
Hannah Cobb

This also assists individuals with disabilities in working, school, medical visits, and social and recreational events.

Having a telephone or a device with a video screen allows two people who know sign language to communicate. A hearing impaired person can also speak to a non-signing person through a video relay service in which an interpreter facilitates communication between the two. This would be beneficial for me in my classroom because I have a student with hearing aids who has difficulty hearing but can read lips well. He could use this tool to help him during different activities or with instructions. For example, the teacher could record her self saying instructions and allow the student to watch it on the class iPad and replay it so he has a strong understanding of the instructions.

Haley Chickoree

This device is about the size of a small razor and is used to help those who have lost their voice box produce clearer sounds. It creates a monotone buzz sound that the user can manipulate as the form the words/letters with their mouth. The muscle movements cause the vibrations from the electro larynx to change creating words. To obtain this device, one must fill in a loan agreement form and make an appointment with SCATP to get a device loan. If all works well then that person can look into purchasing the item for themselves.
