Description: Bruno exhibits a childlike innocence. Bruno is largely ignorant
of the horrors of the Holocaust, even when he becomes friends with a concentration camp inmate.

Technique: A technique that is used to show Bruno's innocence is Dialoge. An example of dialoge that shows Bruno's innocence is “Bruno, if you have any sense at all, you will stay quiet and concentrate on your schoolwork and do whatever your father tells you."

Description: Family and friendship are both important themes for Bruno, as he struggles to determine what role he plays in his household, and how to approach his friendship with Shmuel. Bruno has not been indoctrinated with a hatred for Jews, despite the fact that his father is high-ranking Nazi officer, but his parents do stress that he is not allowed to go near the fence.

Technique: A long shot is used to show Bruno and Shmuel together at the fence.

Description: Bruno’s world in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is filled with places he is not allowed to go, and the reasons for these boundaries are rarely explained to him. He is never allowed into his Father’s office, “with no exceptions,” and he and his sister Gretel are often shooed away from dinner parties and important conversations behind closed doors.

Technique: A long shot is used to show that there are walls and gates surrounding their new house keeping them in. Symbolism is also shown through the use of gates and fences. These gates and fences symbolise Bruno being in a prison and behind bars, showing his lack of freedom.

Setting Description:
The House in Auschwitz. The house is described as large with massive oak doors and a big staircase, The exterior colour of the house is described as dull, pale and boring. It's also surrounded by a big wall with a gate exiting the driveway

Significance and theme:
The house is significant to Bruno because it's much different to the house he stayed in Berlin and that he's still a bit sad about leaving. The house also contrasts with the way Bruno behaves, (How he's always optimistic and loves exploring) While the house represents a prison-like structure.

Technique: Body language and Facial Expressions. This was shown in the scene where Bruno was sitting on the stairs, with a sad facial expression showing that this was not what he expected.

Technique: Close up Shot
Close up shot is used to show the facial expressions of the characters. An example of this is shown where Bruno and sitting on the stairs, then pans to his sister Gretel who shows a similar expression

Setting Description:
The concentration camp where Bruno talks to Shmuel is located in Auschwitz. The camp was a large enclosed area where specifically Jews were put to maintain hard labour until death. The camp was had tents where prisoners of war would sleep and a gas chamber

Significance and Theme
The prisoners' uniforms symbolically represent their oppression and servitude. The stripes on their uniforms also relate to prison bars and represent their seclusion in the violent, harsh concentration camps. The fact that the prison uniforms resemble pyjamas symbolically represents Bruno's naive, innocent perspective.

Technique: A technique to show Bruno's innocence and naivety is dialogue. Bruno talks to Shmuel about how he has pyjamas on. Even though Bruno has no clue that Shmuel is a Jew and that this ''farm'' he is referring to is a concentration camp

Quote:
“Bruno: Why do you wear pyjamas all day?
Shmuel: The soldiers. They took all our clothes away.
Bruno: My dad's a soldier, but not the sort that takes people's clothes away. ”

Technique: Long distance camera Shot
A long-distance camera shot is used to show where Bruno and Shmuel are having a conversation. The long-distance shot also highlights how deserted and isolated the camp is.
