Before, I think a leader leads the team to achieve different goals and projects called leadership, and I did not realize that a leader plays an essential role in the group. For example, we had a lot of teamwork or team assignments in the last four years and being a leader or following the leaders did not make me feel serious. Because our short-term goals are only to finish the work on time and try our best to make our assignment better; however, I realized I was totally wrong after I learn this course. My second goal is to improve my conflicts handling style, according to Daft (2018), there will be a positive impact on “team cohesiveness and performance” if the leader has a good conflict solving ability (p. 312). According to Daft (2018), People-oriented behavior can increase “follower satisfaction” (p.51). It is essential that hotels need to have higher customers satisfaction because it related to company’s reputation and revenue, same as customers’ satisfaction, the followers’ satisfaction sometimes can decide a team will succeed or not. I will make sure a good communication between my followers and me, according to Blackman (2018), the working environment will not be positive if people cannot communicate and understand each other well. My second action is to encourage followers even though small achievements. It is essential to promote followers because the followers will remember the encouragement and become more motivated. According to Daft (2018), when followers are facing a problem or under high pressure, leaders should provide “support and encouragement” (p. 53). It always will turn to a positive result if the leader can encourage follower in the right way. When I was working at Coast Victoria Hotel Marina by APA as a banquet server, my manager was always encouraging our teammates. According to Daft (2018), to solve different conflicts is always a difficult challenge in every working place. I think it is essential for me to improve my conflicts handling skills if I want to be a leader in the future. My first action is to do some research about all my followers to have a better understanding of their interests, needs, and abilities, which can help me to put them into the right positions instead of doing something they do not want. According to Daft (2018), “high-performing teams” always have fewer conflicts (p. 312). To know more about my followers not only can reduce the conflicts, but also help me build a better team. When I was working as a banquet server, we do not have huge conflicts because our manager is more like a friend to us and she knew what we preferred and our abilities. She always can find the right way to solve the conflicts when it occurred. My second action is to research and learn deeply about the five conflict-handling styles, which is the dominating style, avoiding style, compromising style, accommodating style and collaborating style. From the learning and discussion during the class, I found that these five styles can almost use in any situations or cases.
